Whats available for a compass type program that allows me to track distance, avg. speed, etc... I'd like to use if for taking a walk or biking... I have Google Maps but that doesnt have this functionality.

Nav4All is a good one you can try. The user interface is a little different from most BB apps.

gpsed will do that.

What is interesting is that the miles shown on the device (track properties) do not match up with the metric values shown above. But the metric conversion to miles matched my odo within a few tenths on distance.

I've also seen a product called TrekBuddy. Looks a little complex. I've not tried it. Google it and you'll see an extensive wiki article and a website by "medical nerds."
