Totally lost all respect for him today. Lobbying to force developers to make apps for him? Socialism is a beautiful thing in China I suppose, but keep that junk out of my country.

Boohoo Chen. Compete with your rivals or files paperwork for bankruptcy. Plain and simple.

I mean, I'd like to see BlackBerry stay but I don't ever want to hear of someone wanting someone else to die unless that person killed tons of people.

Killing a person who's killed many people is not right, nor justified. It's just as bad

Really?? You guys interpreted that to think I'd want him to die?

The company.... BlackBerry should man up and compete with android and apple. And if they can't, then "die".

    It's an analogy. Jesus...

I think that you totally misinterpreted the article. It's not about forcing developers to make apps for BlackBerry. It's about making the apps accessible to all users of any OS. It's not just BlackBerry that's suffering from the way that things are set up right now. If the situation was set up differently, there would be many different OS's out there and people would have far greater choice over their platform.
It's about not allowing companies to monopolize the industry and it's a big problem, not just with apps.

I just wonder why a Canadian company wants to force American companies to change the rules. Why can't they just make products people want like android and apple?

No its not. There's plenty of competition. Remember when BlackBerry was a "monopoly"? Doubt you were complaining then.

The same can be said about fancy restaurants and stores that don't open in low-income or half abandoned neighborhoods. I don't see any way to craft a law that forces businesses to be conducted in non-profitable jurisdictions.

BlackBerry is that low-income half-abandoned crappy part of town. Why would you spend money building premium stores and services here?

On this one, Chen seems to have misarticulated his point ( I hope).

Not only is Chen lame, but what he's doing is totally destroying initiative for his employees (his company) to innovate. Why innovate when you can just force profits with government coercion.

I don't recall a time that there was ever a monopoly in the mobile business. BlackBerry had a very unique product but there was nothing stopping competition from throwing their hat in the ring. And now they have done that. The difference is that they are not using technological advantages for leverage, they are using money. Apple and Google have pretty deep pockets and they are flexing that power as much as they can to squeeze out the competition. Capitalism isn't supposed to be a high stakes poker game where the one with the largest stack wins. Even though Chen doesn't mention it directly, I am sure that Google is a big target in this 'calling out'. It's not right that Google tries to keep a hold on their services because they also have devices in the ring. Android is supposed to be open source so it should be accessible to everyone. I think this is more what the point is. Not that the developers should build for everyone but that the apps should be accessible if there is no justifiable reason for them not to be.
It doesn't mean that developers have to release java versions of their apps for those who still have flip phones and are demanding whatever funtionality they can get out a news app. Netflix for example, runs perfectly on the BB10 platform and, as mentioned, is unavailable. For no good reason at all. This is not right. BlackBerry should be allowed to have anything in 'Snap' directly in BlackBerry World. Apps that don't have a particular reason for Google Services to be attached shouldn't require them. And if they do require them, there is no reason why Google shouldn't allow their services on any device capable of running them. The problem is that Google is not only a provider of services but a competitor. They would rather you to buy a Nexus than a BlackBerry. However, in order for that to be healthy competition, they need to have a better reason than just limiting their services to the other players.
