Is there any harm in using my BB's charging cable that plugs into an electrical outlet instead of the puck's USB cable? I sure don't want to ruin my puck. It works great.

nope. i use my ac adapter all the time.
What puck do you use, if I may ask?
I use the Freedom Keychain 2000.
what maps are you using with your puck? It seems google maps doesn't like me.
I've tried several - BB Maps, Google, AmAzegps, Nav4All, Yahoo! Go, and Live Search. I could never get any of them to work with the internal gps on my 8330 Curve, so I bought the Freedom Keychain 2000 puck. The puck works very well. I've not had it fail to find satellites yet. However, I still have problems getting the software to work all the time. They're inconsistent. One time they connect at once and another time I wait and wait. The ONLY one that I have been able to get to work consistent is Live Search, and only when I use the puck. It connects every time and it's fast. I would like to see them make some improvements, though. I would like to see a Track Up option, 3d maps, and a pointer that indicates my current location instead of a hard-to-see circle. Nevertheless, I really like it. I just wish BB Maps would be as dependable, but it isn't.
I've had similiar problems as you except that I found that BB Maps is the most consistent. While BB Maps is working Live Search is telling me that it can't find the gps receiver. This happens about half the time. Google maps works somewhat better than Live Search. None of them is 100% dependable. They work for awhile than I notice that they stop tracking or in Google's case it goes back to triangulation mode. If I turn off the BT via the icon on the apps screen and than back on, I can usually get one of the maps to restart, usually BB Maps.
It's weird that different people have different experiences. I like BBMaps, but it only works about 80 percent of the time. With LiveSearch, I connect with the puck, then start LS. If it does not connect, I select Continue Anyway. Then I go to LS Options, select Cobfigure gps, hit the Menu key, and select Start gps. If that doesn do it, I restart LS. It always works for me.
Anyone try it with TeleNav?

Nav4All worked before thru the gps on my 8310. So, hopefully, it will work on my Freedom Keychain Gps Receiver.

I'm using Nav4All on my Verizon 8830 with my Freedom Keychain 2000 with no problems, but I haven't tried the voice nav yet. That's been reported to have problems on 8330's.
the complaints of the app losing tracking....is it possible that something in the line of bluetooth (either phone or puck) is trying to go into power save/standby and that's what's causing the issue?
That's a known issue with Google Maps and the Freedom Keychain 2000. Google Maps cannot keep the Freedom Keychain 2000 locked. The puck requires a regular acknowledgement from the BlackBerry, or it goes into battery-saver mode and drops the bluetooth connection. Google Maps is unable to provide this acknowledgement. Blackberry Maps can. So if you want to run Google Maps, it will be necessary to start Blackberry Maps first, let it sync with the GPS, then exit it without closing it and start Google Maps. If you do this, Google Maps will run with no problem.
cool, and you've got the keychain one, have you tried it with the garmin software?
No, can't. Garmin detects that you're attempting to install it on a Verizon BlackBerry and aborts. Garmin only works with the internal GPS on BlackBerries that don't disable it. At least, that was the case the last time I tried it, but that was a few months back. My assumption is they don't want to be using competing external GPS devices, since they make GPS devices.
