its true.. lte is on the way
Almost all of the CDMA carriers have signed on to LTE (although Sprint is going WiMax). When most carriers go 4G, it will be LTE.
wow, I was wondering about this...
TELUS is HSPA 3G+
what's lte? or wimax?
CDMA will be around for a long time. Its going to take years for all 4G networks to be functioning properly. The first 4G devices you will see will probably be dual mode cdma/lte or cdma/wimax
New protocols and transmission methods for wireless signals.
Yup. Dead in the future.
Dang! This is news to me...

Hey guys,
I just purchased the Blackberry Bold 9700 and I won't have it until Tuesday. I'm worried sick that this new HSPA network is going to screw me over. Can anyone shed some light on how good the service will be in places that only had 1X network before? Also does anyone know if they plan to make coverage the same as CDMA in the future? I heard its 93% HSPA and 98% CDMA coverage. If I was to travel across Canada, I won't have any service where I would of with my old CDMA Curve? Thanks for any help you can offer!

VZW has stated that their CDMA network will remain in place for at least another 10 years. I don't know about Sprint, but their strategy is likely the same. VZW's upcoming LTE rollout will be a near complete overlap of the existing network since it's on a completely different freq, and they got the biggest block of spectrum. It's very likely we'll see dual-mode devices (as previously mentioned) for quite some time. It looks like T-Mobile is migrating to HSPA+ and AT&T is apparently going through similar upgrades, but their LTE rollouts won't happen this year.
I imagined that the CDMA will be phased out very slowly, after all most of the mobile phones in North America are still simple cellphones.
telus will completely turn off the CDMA network around 2014-2016...
No surprise there. CDMA isn't a world solution to begin with. 10 years is a short time-span all things considered. "3G" roll out has been slow enough in the states compared to much of the developed world.

yep it's true.CDMA is out and would be replaced by GSM worldwide.
Verizon for one is said to be keeping CDMA and using it exclusively for their Voice part of their network. The LTE part will be for data only initially.
wouldn't surprise me looks like gsm is going to be the way to go one day
CDMA will probably be around for a long time before they do a full switch to "4G". If anything GSM will takeover CDMA very soon because the network can be used very easily and universally.

I don't think you'll see Sprint or Verizon switching over to GSM - ever. They will being in LTE for 4G, and continue with CDMA until they end of life it.
Just like much of everything eventually it will need to be replaced to meet with growing cpapbilities.
My understanding of the Bell/Telus HSPA upgrade is thet every tower they have now carries a HSPA radio. That means that if you had CDMA service, you'll have HSPA.
