In all fairness, RIM is after corporate money... if your $17/hr job cant afford the phone, wait for the "poor man curve" Just Saying...

I don't think so. They are just out to inflict maximum punishment on the early adopters. Price will drop soon after introduction.

Its not a question of affordability. I buy my phones off contract anyway, its a matter of what you get for your money compared to the market, and at $300 it seems like quite a stretch, maybe half it and I'll play along

I think carriers are taking advantage of the high demand of the Bold 9900. Remember when Rogers released the Bold 9000 for $249.99 i believe back in 2007, I think they are following the same suit for the 9900.

The demand for BlackBerry is nowhere close to what it used to be.

Price seems normal to me. It's not just a high end phone, it's a high end BlackBerry. My carrier still sells the 9650 for $200. I got mine at Best buy Mobile for $80, but I doubt even Best Buy had it for less than $200 when it first came out. The carrier wants $35 for a car charger??? I'll get mine at CrackBerry for half that.

With iPhone 5 coming out, nearly the same time, for $200 and every single android under $200, I simply cannot see this phone selling well, disappointing rim can't be happy about this, pricepoint is the most important issue for some people, you can get phones off contract for only slightly more. Who knows, they released os6 at a normal pricepoint and that didnt sell well all this is os is offering is more speed hardware wise os is virtually identical in functionality, nothing seems to be going right from them

I doubt it. It's the carriers that set the prices. Just save up, wait until you're ready. Or if you have the cash, pay for it. RIM's not at fault.

It's actually good that the price is a bit higher than icrap and the android lag slabs. That means there should be less cheap mofos around here crying about how they didn't get their money's worth because the thing doesn't have itunes, "ice cream sandwich" (whatever the **** that is), or the stupidest stuff like "Angry Birds."

Percentage of the Market wise you are correct

Actual volume of people buying the phones, RIM's consistent growth year over year would disagree, since 2007 RIM's subscriber base has grown almost 5 fold

December 2007 RIM has Approximately 12 Million Subscribers, Q2 2012 posted approximately 60 Million Subscribers.

I wonder what Economist has to say regarding this. I remember him mentioning low, and high margins

Does seem high esp. if other phones are cheaper. As for the user base growing it will decline if it's priced above other (considered) better phones.

It doesn't really surprise me the cost is up as the cost of everything is, what does surprise is the claim that it is more then other (considered again) better phones.

Talking with someone regarding the matter, it is slightly higher. But you're right about the perception of inferior products priced higher.

I don't know when you last purchased a smartphone, but Android and iPhone have their fair share of $300 price point devices too.

I hope the price will drop, the bold 9650 is still $200 just as the day it came out.
If it is 300 ill just wait to buy it off contract on craigslist for 200. I'm not cheap and by any means strapped for cash but as a general rule I will not pay over 200 for a phone unless I desperately need it.

    Think about economics...

    High Demand, low prices

    Low Demand, High Prices

Carriers are businesses and just like any other business they will follow simple economic laws
