I apologize if this is a topic beaten to death, but a cursory examination of the forums didn't turn up information that I need. I'm in a situation, with the new phones dropping soon, to either renew my contract with AT&T or move to another provider. Here are some things to consider...
What I like? I've never had any real problems with AT&T customer service, but that may be due to the robust nature of my beloved 9810. I've never had a problem with it, so I've never had to bug AT&T much about it. Their service seems to work smoothly in my area and I've not noticeable problems with dropped calls. I will admit, however, that coverage is not great with some rural areas I travel to once or twice a year.
No big deal, really.
I have two other family members on my account at a cheap rate, which is nice even if that's not a feature exclusive to AT&T. We all share a pool of minutes and, thanks to the rollover plan, we have never come close to running out of talk time in the years that we've belonged. Two of us also have 'unlimited' data plans which are scarcely used thanks to the prevalence of WiFi.
So that's okay. I have some things I might want to stick around for.
What don't I like?
AT&T's policy of charging for both HotSpot tethering and Playbook tethering. I'm also under the impression that they will not activate said features without forcing us off of the unlimited plans.
Which seems a little less than cool, but I understand why they have to limit data useage with their equipment. Still, since both my Playbook and Torch have decided to no longer get along with the WEP open WiFi network I have at work (an issue already hashed out in another thread), I'm not actually able to use my Playbook's internet connection while on the job. This plays **** with Evernote, an application I used to use all the time during meetings with my old Android tablet.
Does anyone have solid recommendations for switching carriers when we go get our BB10 devices? I'm looking to match a solid family plan with unlimited minutes and data useage (because my data will go up considerably if I'm allowed to tether my Playbook). I'm also looking for quality customer service, and I know that AT&T has a horrid reputation for that. I can only assume that a day will come when I need AT&T to support me on an issue and they'll not come through -- or so states their common reputation.
I'm honestly hoping that the WEP problems will clear up once 10 rolls out. That, of course, also assumes that some upgrade to the Playbook will be required. If not the device itself, then at least the Bridge. I suspect that the connection issues actually started once the paired devices began exchanging information over a shared WiFi network. Anyone who's actually worked with this problem, however, should know that's just a guess.
So anyone out there with new suggested carriers that might be better suited to make use of all the fine Blackberry features? In particular, new features that will be made available with BB10.
