From multiple news reports it appears that Canadian Government websites and servers had been hacked. It also appears that emails have been hacked as well.

Without knowing too much about Blackberry's security infrastructure does a hack on government emails mean that Blackberry's BES servers were targeted? From all accounts government employees had access issues with the emails. I am not sure if it was the handheld devices or not but I am curious if anyone with additional knowledge can provide a little context.

Do you assume just because it's Canada they're ALL on BES? lol. No doubt some branches of the Canadian government are on BES but hard to say at this point with the available info how that all even played out.

The Hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility Wednesday for what Treasury Board President Tony Clement says was a cyber attack on the Government of Canada’s computer servers. Some federal emails and several department websites crashed early Wednesday afternoon.

Federal cabinet ministers were being briefed about the matter, with sites for Justice, Public Works and Government Services, the main Canada.ca page, Shared Services Canada (the government’s super-IT department) and even the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) among some of those that were down.

“Confirmed today that Govt of Canada GC servers have been cyberattacked. Until full service is restored please use 1-800-OCanada,” Clement tweeted.

Government email access for some department and ministerial staff was also down, with political staffers handing out their personal email addresses to media.

The attack appeared to be what’s known as a distributed denial service (DDOS) attack, a hallmark of Anonymous. DDOS attacks overwhelm a website with requests so regular users cannot access it.

Right now it sounds like it was an DDOS attack on their website servers, not a data breach. It made websites and some email clients go down but it doesn't sound like anything was compromised. At this point it doesn't sound like anything to do with BB or BES was breached (and I'm not just saying this as a BB fan, it's my objective take on the story.)

This attack had nothing to do with BES servers.

First, the websites were hit with a denial-of-service attack (DoS), meaning the websites were simply overwhelmed with requests and couldn't respond to legitimate website visits.

The phishing attacks via email means that fake emails were sent to staff, with legitimate-looking links in an attempt to get the user to click them (update your banking info, open this attachment, etc). These links usually point to malicious sites in an attempt to install viruses/malware to gain access to internal systems. If the IT department was dealing with a high volume of these emails, they may have temporarily disabled access in order to clean up the emails. If the mail system is inaccessible, BES won't be able to work properly to send/receive messages on mobile devices. Also, phishing emails have little effect on a Blackberry, as most of the malware targets Windows systems.
