Well you get the idea. Just go to blackberry.com and under support, you can find a copy of desktop manager or the CD that came with the phone.
You can also save it via the Desktop Manager. You sync it as a .csv file onto your PC. Then you have all the Contacts (and Calendar entries) in one place.
Also, if you have BBM 5.0 (the one with barcodes and stuff), you can back up those contacts directly to your memory card through BBM
use the apploader found @ [ C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader ] it automatically backs everything up and restores when you do an upgrade/downgrade.
