Due to Facebook getting on board with so called 'Bots' in a big way on its social networking platform, the idea that 'apps maybe a thing of the past' is ringing ever louder in the smartphone arena.

We must all by now see the seriousness of the BlackBerry 10 platforms situation and yet, this approaching see change in the tech industry leads to an interesting question.

    Can bots save BlackBerry 10?

Well, companies are experimenting with "customer service" chat bots.
That together with BBM Channels and BBM Money (if it's ever more widely available) could really make BBM and awesome platform for companies to engage customers.

No they cannot. Also I don't see that apps are a thing of the past. There may be alternatives but in practice, apps are extremely important as they make up for a significant amount of the whole platform experience.

I'm talking about messaging, banking, payment services, virtual reality (big topic), wearables, collaboration software, mobile office and whatnot.

People want choice when it comes to software. BB10 cannot offer that.

Facebook's plan for bots is to become the front end to all things basically (banking, commerce, etc.)

For this to save BB10, wouldn't there need to be an actual official Facebook client for BB10 first?

yep. FB bot to have users sticky to FB, Skype Bot , Google Now On Tap to have search/suggestion everywhere. FB has a good chance with bots but ultimately the OS level bots will overtake it.

More than FB. FB should have learned its lesson with the Facebook phone. They cannot let go of the fact that most things still do occur at the OS level. They badly want to play in the Apple-Google (and upcoming Microsoft) spheres. It does not take much for users to switch from one App to another in the blink of an eye (Facebook's greatest fear =My Space)

Also if Microsoft pulls off the x86 version of a Surface Phone its game on to Apple and Google and they are aware. Really like what they have done and are doing with Win 10.

I absolutely love the BlackBerry Passport and I am in awe of the flow and multitasking prowess of the BlackBerry 10 OS.

That will not change whether BB10 makes it or not. It's an incredible piece of software engineering and I will root for it just based on my opinion alone.

Will I buy an android based BlackBerry handset?

Not at this present moment, although I have guided some colleagues to a purchase of the priv.

Mr Chen has come to the conclusion most of us feared way before the priv was released and unfortunately, BlackBerry takes another step backwards in the hardware division.

The Priv is not the phone for me.

    I would purchase the following:

    Snapdragon 652 processor
5.2 inch 1080p Screen (Full touch version)
    3GB Ram
    32 GB internal storage
    Micro SD Card expansion
    Android Marshmallow
    3500 Mah Battery
    12 MP Camera with OiS

(Version with physical Keypad, based on the 'Classic' keypad design and a 4.3 inch screen attached)

    299

If it costs anything more than that, I am not interested and will either by a Nexus device or an Ip-SE.

    No, bots can't save BB10.

BB10 has effectively been terminated by BBRY, who will soon do the same to BBM - cos development takes vision, engineers and money and BBRY :

    A. Has None
    B.Fired them
    C. Spent it.

John Chens continual message has been services and software, and frankly we've seen very little of either.

Of course this is only my opinion, and bears no resemblance to BBRY's version of reality.
