Just was wondering about the ratios on the camera for both the z10 and q10. There are the ratios of 16:9, 4:3, and 1:1.

So what are the benefits of each ratio? Why would one use the 1:1 or 4:3 over the 16:9? And vice versa?

Any help would be appreciated

1:1 is purely meant as a Q10 ratio, which it'll take the best pictures IMO

4:3 is your normal aspect ratio

16:9 is your widescreen aspect ratio

It's really all about preference and what type of photo your looking to take. Experiment and find out what you like.

He's talking about the photo ratios, not screen aspect ratios...

OP: 4:3 is standard and gives you the maximum megapixels. The other 2 give you cropped images and thus they are lower than the max megapixels that the camera is capable of.

Any suggestion on what ratio could print better photos? Or look better on laptops when you transfer them?

Well 4:3 gives you max definition. It won't fill out a widescreen, but it should look the best

Anything other than a 4:3 photo is basically a cropped version of a 4:3 photo. So a 1:1 photo is actually just a 4:3 photo with 25% of its width chopped off.

Basically, you can't go wrong with 4:3. You can always crop it later to get the 16:9 or 1:1 aspect ratio with no loss in detail.

16:9 is a ratio of 1920 to 1080 pixels. is the
camera a 1080p? (1920*1080)

BB Z10 rocks.

The cameras in the current BB10 phones take still photos well above 1080p.

4:3 photo = 3264x2448 (~8 megapixel)
16:9 photo = 3264x1836 (~6 megapixel)
1:1 photo = 2448x2448 (~6 megapixel)

A 1080p 16:9 image would only have around 2 megapixels of resolution.

All things being equal, more pixels will give you more detail, and since the camera itself has a native ratio of 4:3 (with the other ratios being created by cropping the 4:3 image), then you're going to get the best pics using the 4:3 ratio.

As far as printing the pics goes, it's the same thing. The only difference is that prints almost always involve some cropping, because most of the standard print sizes (3x5, 4x8, 6x8*, 8x10) don't match up to the camera sizes (6x8 being the only one that does).
