Hi, a buddy of mine is retiring, and we want to chip in and buy him a new phone.
I briefly talked to Telus here in BC, and they made it sound like it really isn't a good deal.
What do you guys think, 2 year contract, or buy it?
We easily have the money to buy it if that makes a difference??
    Thank you.

Buy the phone, not the contract. The person at Telus just wants to push contracts as that's guaranteed payments for two years. Let your buddy decide what terms he wants.

Buy the phone outright and then let your friend figure out the service. CJ above me is absolutely correct. Carriers really make no money on the device, it is the 2 year revenue stream they are banking on.
