When you log into a site for the first time it asks you to if you want to save the password. If at a later time you log back into the same site, how can you tell the browser that from now on you want it to remember your password??

Not really understanding your question. You just need to answer "yes" when it asks if you want to save the password.

Or are you saying that the first time you went to the site you said "no" and now you've changed your mind and now you want to save it? Clearing the cache (including the saved passwords option) will start you anew but of course any other passwords will be lost too.
