So i know this is happening all over the US but I had to share my story from today.

I was at the doctors office having my semi annual physical for my job, my doctor asked me what vision i was required to have. So, i whipped my Z10 from my leather pouch and did a quick google search to look it up, after I put my phone back in the sleeve he asked what phone I had, I told him it was the Z10, and he said he didnt know blackberry had anything like that. I got it back out and showed him quickly the hub, browser, and typing. He asked if he could use it and quickly started typing out an email (while other patients waited patiently im sure). Needless to say he was very impressed with the short time he had it in his hands and expressed to me how he had just bought a new droid the day before. He said the Verizon rep did not even mention the Z10 when showing him phones.

After he left i was finishing up with his nurse when the doctor popped back in this time with the IT director for the hospital with who very politely asked if I could give him a tour of the phone, I did, and he too was very impressed. He said he did not even consider BlackBerry for the hospitals phones because he didnt know BB10 even exsited, let alone how fluid and user friendly it is.

I fell in love with my z10 after about three days of playing with it, these guys didnt even get to really use it more than a minute and they loved it.

I also think this is a testament to how much of an utter FAILURE marketing in the US has been, these were two fairly educated americans who had no idea this OS exsisted.

The Z30 WILL SELL if BlackBerry can get the word out, I just hope they find a way to do it.

Great topic, thanks for sharing your story.

I moved the thread to the General Discussion Forum, since it's pretty much a global BBRY topic nowadays.

I'm hoping they pour money into marketing the Z10. Billboards in heavily trafficked (not like that) areas would be great exposure.

This is exactly the kind of thing that probably happens every day here in the U.S. ... people surprised by how great BB10 because they didn't know it existed to begin with.

I hope BlackBerry fixes this. I also hope that your physician is more than "fairly educated," even if he/she is an American haha

I've said it several times: I'm yet to find anyone who has handled a BB10 device and not liked it as-is, but I feel it's gonna take more than just marketing to fix.

Great story, but far too common. The problem is no longer with BlackBerry devices, it's public perception. Most just ASSUME it's the same old BlackBerry, and many don't know anything about BB10. I've always heard,"oh aren't they done". " BlackBerry sucks"...coming from iphone 3 and 4 users.
I believe that the marketing plan going forward needs to show how it's not the same old BlackBerry, show off the device, show off the OS ! Literally tell the consumer to come back, show them how BlackBerry has changed! Show them the way and give them a reason to come back! Many have no idea what they are missing.

Glad to hear your story, and like you, I often find myself trying to sell the device, when really it should be done through a genius marketing campaign from BlackBerry, I have yet to see it...

Even though I'm critical of Blackberry as a company (with their poor marketing being one of the many reasons), it's good to hear that at least some people get positive impressions of the Z10/Q10 when they get to use it. People should have the opportunity to receive all the necessary information they need, both positive and negative, when purchasing smartphones, especially if they do not closely follow the mobile computer industry.

How about blackberry gives a $100 bill to an existing blackberry user who refers another to BB10.

I'd be setting up my own kiosk.

Yes! They should allow people to go door to door, they should allow individuals to show the phones as salespeople to make commission like Mary Kay does.

It is difficult to imagine them not knowing it exists, I saw several Q10 commercials while at the gym for 90 minutes. If the US public doesn't know about blackberry, it isn't for a lack of blackberry trying.

I brought my curve 9315 into an engineering staff meeting this week and got some ribbing for it, as well as comments to the effect that blackberry is dead - the room filled with programmers, most of whom have mobile development experience and moreover most of whom were former blackberry users and including someone who was an IT person at his last job which included running a BES (my first pin message sent was in 2006 or 7 to one if the people in the room).

The problem is that iOS and android offer so much these days to include extremely good development tools and documentation and the ecosystems are so well developed that blackberry would need to offer something head and shoulders above the competitors to gain any traction at this point and blackberry is at best offering something at parity with iOS and android, and even that is probably being generous.

Could it be folks have just plain "tuned out" on anything BlackBerry?

After so many missteps BlackBerry is just plain ignored.

They need a phone with the specs and "balls out" marketing to grab their attention.

I think the most disturbing point about this story is the fact that the "IT" director didn't know about the BB10 platform

It seems that too many IT specialists are either asleep at the wheel or have tunnel vision when it comes to mobile platforms.

It's been that way here too long.
Back when the 9930 was released, I'd been in more than one carrier location to simply fondle the thing and the story never changed. You'd come in the door and if they'd ask you straight up what you want a smartphone for, they'd pull you elsewhere, and if you make to the device and start playing with it, it was common for them to ask some questions and point out how x experience is faster/more modern etc on "this" droid or the iPhone. I only remember one time for sure I went in to pay my bill, was playing with the 9930 and someone simply said "if you have any questions let me know" and let me be. I remember giving a guy h*ll once for trying to sell me a Droid Pro.

So no, carrier stores never say anything positive about BlackBerry, none of them.

True. I was at the gym yesterday. I keep my membership cards, point cards, loyalty cards etc o my phone for convenience. I gave them phone to scan it. They were all surprised that blackberry can download things like that.

That has been my experience too. People have no idea about the new BB 10 phones and are impressed when I demonstrate my phone. Great products, poor support.

The hospital story clearly describes Blackberry's problem and also speaks to a broader frustration with the limitations of top down management and government for that matter. Most information flows downward, very little upwards. So out of touch with the people's needs (consumers) as they chart a course that conflicts with reality @ street level. How many wars and lives have been lost because of this model? If you want to know how the war is going, Ask those on the front lines how it's going. The stories of the micro interactions between sales reps and potential customers (and doctor's offices) is a big part the war. Frustrating as he'll. BlackBerry isn't cool? The OS design from user experience to security is brilliant and unique. Their software is in Porsche, BMW, is the only game in town for system's around the world that cannot fail. High speed trains, air traffic control, cutting edge surgical equipment etc. All they can come up with is a rock video? What about simply telling people why it's better? Anyway, I'm ranting I know but not playing to one's potential and true strengths is frustrating.

Anyway, I feel BlackBerry has flat out, created a superior platform and devices. BB10 is engineering brilliance. Fortunately, the executives and Board of directors are about to lose their jobs (and rewarded for their failure ). Give someone else a chance. Hopefully investors will benefit but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm afraid that ship has sailed. Not sure how the market would respond to a 7-month old device... :/
