Yes, you certainly can. It is not the most intuitive process (honestly, I think that's more on BB than Blueant), but you can receive and send text messages.

Did it read text through ear piece or do you need an app

Ohh, I've never done that. I know you can send text messages for sure, but listening... I'm not sure. I seem to remember that when I had my 9810 Torch that there was a Vlingo app that did.
