Blackberry's unique
I've been closely following media surround the smartphone market and, as a Blackberry user, specifically RIM. In my opinion RIM has one distictive difference that is rarely mentioned, and I just wanted to share my understanding to see if I'm way off. From what I understand, RIM is the only one now that makes, or at least supplies, a smartphone as a complete package with OS and hardware, with multiple device options. Apple makes 1 device, and if you despise touchscreens, you're out of luck. Android is an OS that many manufacturer's built phones for, as is the windows market. Although certain performance parameters may have better numbers, you'll never get the smooth integration, efficiency, and reliability RIM achieves when two different groups are building the two different parts.
I need my phone for communications. I have a home entertainment system to watch movies and videos in the comfort of my couch. Great if your phone can do all these things, but does anybody actually curl up to a good movie on their phone? Perhaps I'm unique in the fact I can survive without media exposure 24/7. And games? Is it really fun playing games on your phone? Isn't a Playstation or Xbox on a proper screen a better experience? I ask, cause I'm not a 'gamer'. I spend my spare time outdoors. Iphones suck for messaging and phone calls. Last time I tried writing an email on one, I gave up and waited till I got home.
I like that RIM is still building the whole package. I like that they offer a variety of devices. I like that they remember what a smartPHONE is for, and don't sacrafice functionality for gadgetry.
Just my two cents.

I agree also. I have my Blackberry to do email, BBM, SMS, etc while not home and when I am home, I use my PB to do the BBMing.
If I want to surf the web, I use my laptop with Wifi and If I want games, I use my 1G Ipod touch ( I'm not a heavy gamer).

I really like Blackberries, and am looking forward to my next one. (I made a leap to Android for a while to see how the other half lives. It's fine, but I wouldn't really say "better" - truth be told, I miss my Bold.) That said, BB fans are frustrated that they aren't given the option right now to download the same apps as iphone and Android users. That doesn't make Blackberries less excellent at their core functions. But more options app-wise would certainly be better as it would make more users happy, leading to more sales etc. So both camps have a point.

This is very true and well written compared to some of the other "opinions" lately on this forum. I think all phones do the exact same thing pretty "efficiently" and get the same things done in a different manner. That's why there's such a huge variety since everyone has a different taste for full touchscreens, combos, or qwerty phones.

I, too, like the BlackBerry platform exactly as it is. I don't want BlackBerry to become anything like android or apple.
