Reliability is part of Security, the reason BlackBerry isn't going to make up 98% of DoD mobile devices, is the DoD is moving away from sole sourcing where they can. As BlackBerry network issues have shown, their network is an issue in reliability and thus security. And their current situation as a company that is circling the drain is also a huge concern for the DoD and many other enterprise customers.

Did you read the article? They said it WILL make up 98% of their devices.

I think with "BlackBerry in a box" (i.e. BES, BBM, etc. deployed as an on-premise solution) the DoD will no longer be reliant on BlackBerry's network. I mentioned some time ago that this would be a logical move for BlackBerry (package up all their services into an on-premise solution) and recent comments by John Chen indicate that this is their direction.

A lot of people have been talking about this for the last year. It's current BB devices that are being mopved to a new support structure. Yes, it's news because BB gets the service revenue. But new phones may not be forthcoming.

That link is flawed then. They should never have put "Legacy" in that sentence.

All the news releases about this do not state "Legacy". But they do state this QUOTE:

Ask yourself why the Pentagon would purchase BBOS devices over BB10? Not going to happen. BB10 is also the only mobile OS to be ATO.
    So you were wrong.

It's actually legacy bb devices not bb10,

    Per the op's link:

"To reiterate an ongoing development, a new Pentagon system will predominately support the golden standard-BlackBerry, across 98% of the active devices when the new defensewide system begins rollout at the end of month. Around 80,000 (legacy) BlackBerry devices and less than 2,000 Android and iOS devices will be supported at launch. Volumes of which are being transitioned over from the old system. While small on the cross platform holdings at launch; the system is part of a move away from traditional work stations to a mobile first mentality for data access which allows data to be protected within the walls or the organization, and secured when outside them."

Perhaps a mod should edit the title of the thread to reflect as much.
In the real article it's a mix of BB10 and BBOS

    Time to fold I think.

Even CB's ChrisU's article has been updated to reflect that it's the Pentagon connecting 80k legacy, already in people's pockets, BB handsets to a new management system.

Unless, you maybe think CB and ChrisU are part of the anti-BB media conspiracy too?

And, it seems the MDM to which these old BB handsets are being connected isn't even BES - it's Fixmo! Fixmo's website has this win publicised on their home page.

How many times does it have to be repeated that no NEW BlackBerrys are being deployed? Also the MDM solution they are deploying is by Fixmo, not BlackBerry.

From the original Jan 16th press release from DISA:

"DOD will begin deploying version 1.0 of the unclassified mobility capability Jan. 31 and will build out capacity to support up to 100,000 users by the end of the fiscal year.

The program currently supports 1,800 unclassified mobile devices including iPad 3 and 4, iPhone 4S and 5, Samsung 10.1 tablets and Samsung 3S, and Motorola RAZR devices with participation from the combatant commands, services, and agencies throughout DOD. The program also supports 80,000 BlackBerry phones.

I think this should have been rather obvious since the beginning; but, bullish investors are so quick to grasp straws at the sign of possible good news.

It went from 'support 80k Blackberry devices' to 'support 80k BB OS7 and BB10 devices' to 'purchasing 80k new Blackberry devices' really fast on financial media.

The funny thing is that the pentagon made a statement to dent new purchases. But if the news was that they were using legacy device when in fact it WAS new devices nothing would have been done.

It's sad to see that people want to distance themselves from BlackBerry at all costs... especially bc they are clearly the beat option.

Pentagon is basically saying 'no way did we buy new BlackBerry devices'... 'but we also didn't buy other new devices to replace the old BlackBerry, bc there really isn't any thing better'

Given the obsession many here on CB have with "evil" stock manipulators, I do hope some of them had the good sense to make a killing on this.

Are you suggesting the Pentagon is a stock manipulator ?

Accusing the media of doing such is already shaky. Pointing fingers at the Pentagon is a conspiracy. Remember that the Pentagon is a non-profit government institution.

Pentagon is basically saying 'no way did we buy new BlackBerry devices'... 'but we also didn't buy other new devices to replace the old BlackBerry, bc there really isn't any thing better'
Nowhere in the statement did the Pentagon assert that competitor products were superior or inferior. Nor did the Pentagon imply any hypothetical future purchases. (And Pentagon made it really clear in its statement to theVerge that the statement did not speak regarding "purchases") Again, that is completely un-Pentagon/government like in nature.

What the Pentagon is likely saying is 'No, we did not splurge funds to update to 80,000 new marginally improved smartphones so watchdog groups get off our backs.' And this is an actual burden the Pentagon and other government institutions, but especially the Pentagon, must face on a day-to-day basis.

I understand they didn't SAY that BlackBerry products are better/worse. But the implication of them NOT buying NEW BlackBerry devices is that the old ones are good enough, and that they cannot justify buying new BlackBerry devices, OR new devices from other makers BECAUSE the current BlackBerry devices they are using are fit for the job.

So, this is GOOD news. New BlackBerry devices would be great, but knowing that the old ones are still working that well is also good news

It says the DOD is not moving forward with any new cell phone system. That they will, for now, use what they have.
They continue to assess phones and systems but have not found anything that interests them enough to buy.

In short, Apple, Android, Windows and BB10 do not offer anything better, for the buck, then what the DOD is using now.

Seeing this over and over. Legacy BlackBerry over BB10.

It does seem more and more plausible that Fixmo is planning on doing the whole head-end solution themselves.

I have never really seen the media claim that Blackberry phones are inferior in security (or even just at par) with the competition.

All they've helpfully pointed out is that the average consumer has no use for military level encryption in his/her phone.
