2 nights ago i got a virus on my 8130 phone. I received a text message from a number I didn't know that had no title, I opened it up and it was a really raunchy porn video of toys entering some girl's special parts. At first I thought nothing of it and just ignored it but then i noticed my phone was really slow all the time when I was opening up messages and so on and I came to the realization that the virus had completely messed with my phone. It was deleting all text messages I was receiving and deleting my call log. It deleted a text message I received from a girl I'm dating and because i missed it, it almost completely blew up my chances with this girl..fortunately things were worked out. Anyways, point is this virus f&ed my phone and all I had to do was open a text message. The only way I could fix the problem was to completely reinstall the operating system on my blackberry. Has anybody else had this problem or know of a way to prevent viruses getting through on my blackberry?

Nope never had that problem... That is really ode though. I've had txt messages that weren't viruses but sure looked like them, I always delete those bfore I even open them now. I thought that the BB was pretty hackproof, but I may be wrong.

That sounds more like a low memory issue than a virus. Check your free file memory and post it, so we can see it. Go to options icon, click it and scroll down to status and click, what does it read...

I was told the same thing. I was told it's not worth a hackers time to create a virus...

There's no viruses for bb it was a forward text message. You are low on memory like severe said

I've been known to say on this site that it's not possible. That's because that's what I had learned based on a number of different things. One of them being that Blackberries weren't all that popular so why spend time writing a virus for something that's only going out to a few hundred thousand people? NOW however they're getting pretty big and it seems like everyone has one--maybe it's getting to be more gratuitous to write viruses.
Wonder if Apple will have similiar troubles!

I reinstalled my operating system so I can't really show you what the memory configurations were but I can guarantee you that it was not a memory issue because I could still receive email notifications, they would not disappear... plus I made sure all the applications on my phone were closed and I deleted a whole bunch of my old messages... I'm 100% certain this was a virus and not a memory issue

I am inclined to agree with SevereDeceit and Blueberry, those are classic symptoms of low memory.

The fact that you can still receive email is normal. It appears the BlackBerry geeks consider SMS and MMS sub-critical and are subject to deleting when space is very low.

There are no known BlackBerry virus. The only demonstrated malware are rootkit trojans masquerading as legitimate applications. You have to install them, not just view them.

I have no doubt that BlackBerry will be targetted by the bad guys as soon as it becomes profitable to do so. Until now there have been very few ways to exploit the Java language, and the target population is too small. Compare millions of BBs, or billions of Windows boxes and I know which gives the best chance of a quick result.

There is some risk from viruses and spyware, but the major threat is to the Windows box running Desktop Manager, rather than the mobile device. I've seen a few recent reports of sites hosting malicious or contaminated downloads which claim to be BB software - usually pirated or cracked. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but if the video was attached to a message, are the not stored to the BB until such time as you decide to view? I am thinking that by viewing the video whatever free space you had may have gotten used up by the video even if it was temporary memory use related to the video. It appears to me the BBOS is designed to use the internal memory in a similar way to how windows uses the HD for virtual memory. So by opening the video especially if say it was a huge file it very well could have pushed you below the safe threshold where messages and logs get deleted.

Sounds like a memory issue to me as well, But - I agree with the above.

That's not a virus its a low memory issue. Go to settings->status and where it says file free: whatever bytes. If it says 0 bytes its time to clean out your berry by deleting mesages and texts and programs you don't necessarily use that often. I make it a habit to clean my messages at least once every 4 days.

A virus on an attachment is unlikely in a BB. Normally viruses have to be executed and to my knowledge the BB media player is not capable of executing anything.

I agree with the low memory issue and as was pointed out, by downloading the attachment you probably ran out of memory just by trying to view it.

But did you actually check your free memory? Even if you deleted all your old messages and didnt have any apps running, there still can be instances where most of your available memory will be eaten up.

Also did you try a soft reset or a battery pull before wiping the phone?

Even if your memory is full you can still receive emails. At least that has always been the case with me.

Ok I am new to Crackberry. I want to take advantage of the free ringtones etc but will that make me open to viruses etc on my BB curve 8900? I am very cautious of what I download with this phone because I don't have insurance and I dont want to ruin my phone! Please Respond!

Besides, even if there was a legit virus, it's not coming in the form of a text message. The worst anyone could do to the iPhone was knock it off the network with a malformed SMS.

As for browsing to a website to find a virus, the Java Virtual Machine is pretty adept at saving its own ****. Nothing much can install or run without your permission. That's why I screen all email on my BlackBerry before I decide to open it on my home PC.

I have seen some very obvious viruses and trojans too, and I feel safe knowing my BlackBerry will not be compromised.

When I purchased my BB 8900 Curve (LOVE IT) I specifically asked when I was buying it at the TMobile Store about viruses/antivirus software, and I was told that Blackberries do not get viruses, because it's not like a regular computer. Hope this helps.
