Watched it last night. As I mentioned on Twitter, Of all the things dramatized and exaggerated in the #BlackBerry movie, the BlackBerry Storm booting up in under 3 mins. takes the cake. Never has a BlackBerry booted that fast.

I don't know how much of the Book or Movie are true.... and of course a Movie is going to take a free hand in doing a story, as otherwise I expect it's pretty boring.

But it doesn't matter all that the did.... in the end it's over.

This movie got really good ratings. Imagine if this got a global release, and they announced a new phone during the opening of the trailers, at every screening, along with the press.. if only. I couldn;t find a way to watch it in Australia, does anyone know if a 4k blu ray release is coming?

The movie left theatres long ago, and has been streaming on AppleTV for quite some time.

Both critics and movie goers rated it pretty high.... few BlackBerry employees found it strayed from reality. But in the end, best I can tell it cost $5 Million to make this movie... but it only made $2.6 Million at the box office.

I'm sure streaming deals and sales of physical and digital media will help, but those are suppose to be the icing on the cake. So it's pretty much a financial flop by movie standards, as they generally look to do 2X or 3X the cost off the initial box office receipts.

    Just wasn't enough interest...

Not enough superheroes, sadly. . I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a complete failure yet, however. Gotta wait until the streaming revenue numbers come in. The industry has seen a shift with regards to those numbers in the last 10 years or so. But yeah, not exactly a world-beater for box office. I thought the film was pretty good as far as entertaining but no doubt lacking a great deal on what the reality was like. Have to embellish to make a story like this.

That is hilarious, Apple making money from BlackBerry!

Seems only BlackBerry can’t make money from BlackBerry!!!

A bit late to the party but it was actually pretty good. Much better than I thought it would be.
And sadly, I actually had no idea about most of this (what they went through).
But darn sure, they should have gone full screen... and lost the keyboard.

Apparently the movie took some liberties with what it portrayed, in comparison to reality.

There was an interesting podcast interview featuring the director in March, they had to get government financing for the movie which brings restrictions on distribution. That's likely why the box office/hype wasn't bigger.

Historically a lot of movies made most of their money with DVD and video on demand. I don't know if that's still the case with the rise of streaming services but I'd imagine revenue per stream is a lot less than revenue per rental.

It's all in flux these days as everyone wants a piece of the pie, but clearly most the providers are still trying to work out how to make money on streaming. Which is why I'm not sure this Strike is going to be settled anytime soon. I see a lot of folks calling out CEO's for making so much, but most these companies are involved in many business - some of which are very profitable. But their streaming business are dragging down their bottom line...

But BlackBerry isn't currently streaming on Apple TV, it is an option to buy or rent.

Another film that might mention BlackBerry...

Dumb Money comes out this month, it's mostly about the GameStop short squeeze of January 2021. But a few other stocks including BlackBerry played a part in that Meme investing craze. It did premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last week.

Yeah for every winner there is a loser.... or usually losers.

Did allow a few of the long time "I love BBRY" players to get out.... but then I think a few really felt it was more than a temporary Meme play and were buying. One of the main winners was Chen, as the stock went high enough for long enough to artificial trigger some of his performance bonuses. Which he happily accepted.

I’m guessing it was the small players who lost most, small amounts each but overall a fair bit.

The bigger players and as you say those long term holders would no doubt have been selling into the rising market and rubbing their hands at their reduced losses!
