I like to share my experience with Blackberry Limited support team.

My Priv had some problems like random restarting and overheating issue since December 2019. In fact, I rarely used this phone, but I wanted to keep it in a good condition and add it to my collection. As you all know, the device is old, and I bought it in 2015. I took it to a local repair shop in New York, but the man told me that they no longer fix any BlackBerry phones.

Finally, I contacted Blackberry Limited support, and after verifying all information, they told me that I need to buy the "Incident Based Support" in order to fix the issues with my device because it is out of warranty. The cost was $35, and I needed to speak with a specialist over the phone for few weeks. The technical support specialist finally diagnosed the problems as a hardware issue, and I should send my phone to them in order to get it repaired.

At the beginning, he asked me to pay $259 as a repair fee, but I argued with him about this and told him that "you didn't let me know about this extra cost from the beginning". However, the technical support specialist escalated my case to a "supervisor" that he contacted me and I agreed to pay another $40 only.

One week later after I ship my phone, I didn't get it back.
    I got this!

    A new in box Priv!

This is simply the best technical support that I have been offered in my life from any company, ever!Blackberry support is insanely great!-1.jpgBlackberry support is insanely great!-2.jpgBlackberry support is insanely great!-3.jpgBlackberry support is insanely great!-4.jpgBlackberry support is insanely great!-5.jpg

That's cool. But I would assume they still have boxes lying around collecting dust.

The most surprising thing the device build date is December 2015 with Android Marshmallow.
Why do they still keeping these old units yet!

Because it's easier to fire off a shelf item instead of fixing something. It's not like they can sell them otherwise.

Hopefully the battery on that one lasts a little longer considering it’s a battery that is almost 5 years old now, may be best to get a backup just in case.

    Congratulations on your new Priv!

    Thank you!
The Priv isn't my daily driver. I just wanted to fix it before adding it to my collection.
Battery seems fine so far. The processor and software are pretty old now.
The device is still amazing in 2020.

Yes that is awesome service from BlackBerry!
Congrats on your PRIV. Using right now.

I use my PRIV as daily driver alongside my KEY2 Red Edition.

    Enjoy!

If only the Priv was delayed a few months and shipped with the 820 and Marshmallow rather than the maligned 808 and Lollipop. One has to hand it to BlackBerry in their design of mobile smartphones.

I guess the Priv was already delayed for awhile. It was supposed to be released by February 2015. But, you are right. SD 808 wasn't that good, and everyone knows the story of SD810.
It was a difficult choice for BlackBerry at that time.

They started developing in Feb 2015 - at which point they weren't even sure which OS would be on it.

By the spring, they knew it was Android, and the device was expected to be ready by late Sep or early Oct 2015. It eventually delivered in Nov.

Still, the first 820 SoC devices didn't even start appearing until March and April of 2016.

Disable HUB suite and the SOC 808 handles amazingly well and considering also a 5 year old device.

The 808/810 is still considered the most disastrous Qualcomm SoC ever produced. They made huge mistakes with cooling.

I find even browsing on my Priv too hot to handle after a short while.

Such a shame, I loved the design of the Priv but like you I had heat issues and random battery drain... The KeyOne BE replacement however has got to be my favourite smart phone ever... A reliable partner that I could depend on during the busiest of days...

I always had good luck with Blackberry support, if they couldn’t solve it over the phone, they would start a ticket and email me with the solution and then follow up the email.

Story I heard was that Chen had the heat turned off in Waterloo that winter to save money. Employees that were testing didn’t notice.....

I don't experience this heat. use it daily. Yes not the best SOC...but it's usable on daily basis. Make sure 3gb RAM not running tight, clear cache, clear background process...and you can use.

    Oh really?
Even the new unit I just received right now overheats.

Depends how you configured it, memory usage and what you have running in background.
HUB uses massive amounts of Data for example.

I use app Taskmanger app from PlayStore to 'Kill background apps and feel up memory.

Using my PRIV right now. It's a daily driver alongside my KEY2

It's not memory or data throughput that causes the issue - it's clock cycles.

Just regular browsing can pin a CPU on a smartphone.

Could be ...but have noticed that when RAM is basically full, with open apps, etc..it does warm up. As soon as I clear tasks and free up memory temp drops.

It's certainly true that as other resources are consumed, the CPU has to work harder. I'm just saying you can easily pin the CPU even without using any other resources.

The PRIV is the one device that I could hardly multitask on even compared with LG G2 back then. I had to constantly make sure I was closing each app out and when it had connectivity issues and phone call or email simultaneously, it would get warm.

The V30 I have exhibits some minor similar issues but not as bad as the G2 and PRIV was far worse than both. In comparison, the XR is great compared with the 6 and 5 that it replaced. The KEYones really helped me appreciate 6XX mid-tiers for Android/iOS battery life comparisons.
