"BlackBerry Said to Negotiate for Tax Refund of up to $1B" - BlackBerry Said to Negotiate for Tax Refund of up to $1B - Bloomberg

They have a lot of unsold inventory, they should get an early refund.
Let's see if they're smart enough to put that cash to good use.

From what it sounds like, this is either a refund of overpayment on taxes, a delayed payment of taxes to boost the company, or a combination of the two. So as long as the company doesn't go belly-up, our hard-earned tax dollars are safe.

Q10 and Canadian all the way! Q10SQN100-3/10.2.0.1791
I think it's likely to be a combination though I don't know for sure.
I hope they Canadian Gov't approve the early release.

As a bailout no, but you can bet that every analyst will go to extraordinary lengths to make the point that BBRY's cash balance is made up of a large portion that is NOT from anything revenue generating (sales of devices, service fees, etc...)
at this point I think everyone that even remotely follows stocks knows this. At this point they need to weather the cash burn. Having a couple extra billion dollars laying around cant hurt!

hmm, i hope my paid tax dollars get used well in this tax refund
It's a refund from what BlackBerry paid, not you.

Longer runway. People are forgetting that they still have $3B in purchase commitments alone due to suppliers in the next 12 months.
My thoughts as well. Get a bunch of cash to buy out those commitments.

    Maybe they have plans.

Yep it's simple get as much cash on hand as possible. If they get this, plus the 2B they have already, plus the maximum from the debt sale of 1.25b they will have a cash position of $4.25B.

That goes too R&D, payment obligations and marketing hopefully.
