BlackBerry saw 40% jump in sales after exchange offer in India

In coming months BlackBerry will be launching smartphones at various price points based on BlackBerry OS 7 and 10.

Sometime back to catalyze the uptake of BlackBerry Z10 among consumers BlackBerry had introduced exchange offer and it has resulted in 40 per cent increase in sales of the flag ship smartphone.

Under the scheme, one can exchange his or her older smartphone for the BlackBerry Z10 and get discount between Rs 3,000 to Rs 11,000 on Z10.

Read the first article that you posted, but then noticed another BlackBerry link to side. It is a review of the Q5, kinda puts things in perceptive.

    BlackBerry Q5: First look

We spent some time with BlackBerry Q5 during its launch in New Delhi and here is our first-hand account of the smartphone.

After launching two high-end smartphones, BlackBerry finally launched a mid-end smartphone Q5 for Rs 24,990. Previously, BlackBerry has been criticized about the pricing of Z10 and Q10 and through Q5 it wanted to address the anger of price sensitive customers. But, I guess that will not happen.
Overall, though, the BlackBerry Q5 packs the goodness of BlackBerry 10, its hardware and body materials are a dampener. Also, the price point at which Q5 is available would not enthuse many potential buyers, and moreover, BlackBerry has not introduced a buy back scheme for Q5, which might have helped it in gaining attention of consumers to some extent.

Well, I sport a Q5 (add to my Q10 and Zeds) for a whole day now.
This is nowhere cheap (not sure what "dampener" means in the context).
Also, one more time ... it's not a low-range device. Mid-range it is and no, it will not fit people who use a $1 flipphone or a cheap Chinese android.
But I believe no one expects that at launch (full price). Then, let's wait 4-6 months and see what happens in the "sales promotion" area

Imho, I don't think BlackBerry will introduce an exchange scheme so soon for the Q5... July and August are more about college admissions than anything else..

However, I partly agree some other scheme with the Q5 would have been wonderful..

In India I think that are four or five manufactures now that are putting out home grown smartphones - they have devices that run the gambit in price.

So the question will be is what makes a BB10 device worth more?

With BB7, it was the fact that you could use in on a cheaper BlackBerry Data Plan because it used BIS. Now BlackBerry is hoping it's good looks and charm will cause buyer to swoon and hand over their cash... that does work on some. But will it work on enough Indian buyers?

India is a huge country, with many enterprise. Q5 is built for that. Enterprise troops.

Good move.Shame they cant push out emails to current user base about bb10 devices just to keep their minds on BB.Legal team should find holes in BB's own terms and conditions and just send the emails to userbase. That 1 email would change alot.In fact BB need to change the terms and condition and have mandatory promo emails allowed just no spammings.

According to the CIA world factbook, Canada had 27.387 million mobile phone subscribers in 2011 - granted there would have been growth, but many of those would still be dumbphones. https://www.cia.gov/library/publicat...k/geos/ca.html

    India: 893.862 million (2011) https://www.cia.gov/library/publicat...k/geos/in.html
