Good news! Chen seems to hire very diligently in key positions. I think that these hirings go along with relatively high wages as BlackBerry is not the most attractive employer in its turnaround stage.
But nevertheless it is important to bring good people to the table.
If you think back to Mr. Heins, creating the position "Global Creative Director" and staffing it with Alicia Keys, what a huge waste of money that was...

Doesn't sound like a company getting out of hardware... just one looking for other ways to sell their products.
I'm sure Chen is aware that some Retailers/Carriers gave BlackBerry their last chance. Going forward AT&T and Verizon can't afford to sell and support devcies that probably haven't sold 50K for them. (it clear some US Retailer has already taken a loss and cleared out old inventory)
But if Chen can cut out a few middle men, than he can either sell for less or make more profit... possible. Those middle men were handling the orders, inventory, support... that's new overhead that BlackBerry will have to take on. But in enterprise they have some of those "channels" already with their software sales division. The question is can they do both... direct sales and some retail sales? And will sales of 1 million a year be a viable number? Cause I doubt most hardcore fans are going to really be interested in these generic overpriced enterprise add ons.
