It was a 3 year contract which ended in 2015.
That's a shame. Wish they continued support. Thanks for the info

It didn't help them much, did it.

Nascar's wider appeal in North America anyway could be good. Especially running QNX powered telemetry to improve the viewing experience. One constant ad for the duration of the race.

The one time I still could see a BlackBerry logo on TV, you know...hey, still there!.
Well, let's see how long Nico keeps his Passport.

Waste of money anyway. Who buys brands they see on an F1 car?
Oils, fuel, etc... but that's something you'd get anyway and can't avoid... :-)
There's a Crack in the Berry right now...
It was a total waste of cash.
Hope BlackBerry logo at the Manor Racing this season. Supporting an Indonesian driver Rio Haryanto. Since Indonesia is one biggest BlackBerry users.

Would be an even bigger waste of money as NASCAR has a much smaller range. Would almost be as big a waste of money as a Superbowl ad
At least the sponsorship of F1 showed people that Blackberry was still around.
Only thing their marketing team did right
Does Nascar have the class of F1? And does BlackBerry want to be associated with it..?
That's just a question... :-)

Part of the reason why it may not have helped them is because you didn't see them much. I don't know how many of you heard about all the complaints about the races and how they didn't want to show the Mercedes cars that much because they were always way ahead in the race and people thought it was boring. So what did they do instead? Show you the exciting battles for 8th and 9th place. :) :D So, any advertising happens only for very small periods. When the race starts (and of course Mercedes is at the front) and a quick glimpse (or Glympse :) ) when the race ends.
As much as I love both Mercedes and BlackBerry, I don't think it really helped BlackBerry. Would love to see them continue to support them, but I doubt they can afford to as I'm sure there are a lot of companies who would like to be on that car and be associated with a winner.
That $12M+ is better saved or spent on something else.
Ya. No one buys Red Bull.

All good points. BlackBerry advertising in racing is a bit of a boondoggle. However, advertising in that arena in the US is better served through Nascar. Nascar is full of product ads used by the majority of Americans. That would be right placement. However, to someone's point, Nascar is not wide enough worldwide.
Sponsorship for product placement would need to be multi channel to be successful and for that passive form of advertising with no guarantees BlackBerry just does not have the capital to spend.
Not to mention that advertising without an interesting draw would still leave people not talking about BlackBerry or finding it differentiated from other phones.
QNX is probably much more suited for the automotive advertising stream. I could see it sponsoring all of the telemetry feeds And offering up the electronics to support it.

Red Bull sponsors way more than just F1 (Crashed Ice, Air Race, Cliff Diving, etc). They also have television advertisements, something BlackBerry doesn't have/do. F1 was a former CEO, Thorsten Heins endeavour. He had a hard-on over sports cars, thus the F1 contract and silly names for phones like Z10, Q10 and Z30. Notice now that Chen is in charge, those "car" names are no longer... and thus the F1 contact, is no longer...
not to mention the two phone names that are actually car names as well (Audi Q5 & BMW Z3). I wish they stayed with the old names that had character and history, and were some of the closest things to being inter-generational icons BB ever had (Classic -> Bold, Q5 -> Curve, Priv -> Torch, Leap > Storm (kidding))
And yeah, F1 has become far too boring and one-team dominant, and I'm not alone of this opinion. It's nice BB was associated with a perennial winner and I think they got out of it as much as they can and I'm certain it helped their image and perception in non-NA markets a bit, but today they are not in the business to be shelling out huge sponsorship dollars, partnering with celebrities for paid endorsements and putting out pretentious vague ads on the Superbowl.
Waste of money

Race fans are known to be brand loyal. In the US, Nascar sponsorship would have made more sense, but overall this is far from being their worst marketing decision.
At least it was marketing. At this point seeing a Blackberry logo on top of a pizza delivery vehicle would be more marketing than they do now.
Yep. Like porn ads.
love your curVes and all your edges all your peRfEct imPerfections
Being a talk of the town and one of the biggest market for Blackberry. I am fully agree that Blackberry should advertise with Manor Racing. Well atleast BBM would be nicer.. 200 Mio Indonesian will certainly appreciate Blackberry and would give more impact compared to sponsoring Mercedes.
The entire F1 team were using Z30's. They ran a highly efficient operation with BB10. Watch them on YouTube. They will tell you the Priv is a complete joke. Compared to BB10.
Rocking a Z30
For some reason this had passed me by. Well that sucks - even if it were just a vanity campaign it sure did look good having BlackBerry associated with a luxury market commodity.
