What if BlackBerry did the same thing as Microsoft, by creating a keyboard app for iOS and Android?

With the World's best keyboard, BlackBerry would outperform Microsoft by miles :0)

BB's keyboard is built on top of the SwiftKey engine, which BB has licensed. I'm not privy to BB's deal with SwiftKey, but it may well be that BB isn't allowed to use it on anything but their own devices.

There already is a VERY similar iOS app called Crimson Keyboard. Flick typing just like BB10 VKB.

Chen should have leveraged such key features and actually told people about them when he still had an edge... too late now.

3rd party keyboards are a dime a dozen in ios and especially in the android (which allows 3rd party keyboard from the start). also as Troy already mentioned bb actually hired SwiftKey to help BB create a virtual keyboard. and I would not be surprised that SwiftKey still support bb with it.

Say what you want about Windows phone... but Microsoft just bought Swiftkey.

Showing a lot more commitment to handsets than BlackBerry is.

The world's best keyboard ought to support word flow, as every other platform now has options for. BB10 is the only one you can't swipe on. There's a reason why the others all support it now: a lot of people want it.

But didn't they spin off their mapping to vw/audi last year? The one used on their phones as well?

You also have to understand the size and money of Microsoft vs blackberry globally. It's really no contest.
