The transmission path to and from the phone is also very secure. I have heard the OTA encrytpytion algorithm compared to Triple DES or TES. Compression help a little bit to but not much but even this is one more spep in the route to crack open an email.
With all due respect Pete, BIS email is not encrypted. If someone using BIS needs/desires email encryption, they need to invest in one of the many third party solutions that provide it. RIM is able to scramble BIS BBMs using Triple DES because there is a shared global cryptographic key on present on every BlackBerry phone. Think about it for a second. How would you securely send an email's encryption key to various receivers and email clients without a system already in place to do so? Please refer to RIM's documentation: Comparing BlackBerry Internet Service and BlackBerry Enterprise Server features.
Email messages sent between the BlackBerry Internet Service and the BlackBerry Internet Service subscriber's BlackBerry smartphone are not encrypted. When transmitted over the wireless network, the email messages are subject to the existing or available network security model(s).
