Blackberry defines its prosumer target market

Hate to tell you this, but the same people conducting business on their phones also like to have fun to - they are watching netflix on their phones; they are using "cute apps" as you stated on another posting. To argue that business people don't want or will not use non-business apps on their phones is ludicrous and short-sighted. It's arrogant. Just as is the belief that people who don't do business (whatever the heck that actually is) solely use their phones for entertainment purposes.
The dichotomy between an entertainment or toy phone and one for business is false. Apple knows that. Android knows that. Samsung knows that. Everyone else in the technology sector knows that. Except for Blackberry that is. And what company is having difficulty again?10-18-13 08:16 PMLike 10 -

I work with a bunch of doctors...they, NEVER STOP WORKING- and they love their iphones for all the professional apps they use unavailable on BB. More BlackBerry attitude- apparently if you want to do something more than talk or check email there is something wrong with you. You are right about one thing- BlackBerry isn't for him and apparently it's not for most since they are now prostituting themselves to the highest bidder. The prosumer statement made by the BlackBerry rep is embarrassing. No wonder BlackBerry is a mess- they just don't get it and they are still advertising that they don't get it.

"My blackberry phone is so awesome, because it has a touch screen!!!!" 1 year before BlackBerry phones had a touchscreen these same people where saying that nobody needed a touch screen because a blackberry can navigate through menus without one. Which somehow proves BlackBerry phones superiority for not needing a touchscreen.

The point is, there are plenty of professionals who work hard and "get the job done" (kindly do not use that phrase again), yet who are just as human as the next person, and who have diverse interests that may well include watching a movie on Netflix or what have you.
This just shows how absolutely clueless these chuckleheads in Waterloo are. They've constructed a myth in their collective mind of some all work and no play automaton who, if he or she exists, is hardly a viable market.
We're back to "tools not toys" again. I've seen this movie before, and trust me, it doesn't end well.

- My apologies - didn't mean to offend you. So many on the forum really do think like that, so it's hard to tell anymore...

- Must not be many left in the world then.
Or, people have found way to get thing done without Blackberry.
Or, absolutely nothing is getting done by the majority of the world.
Wonder which it could be.10-19-13 02:13 PMLike 3 - Tre LawrenceBetween RealitiesEven more worrisome than this "prosumer " red herring? The fact that some folks believe it, and trumpet it as good strategy.
I'm convinced BBRY doesn't believe in it itself.10-19-13 02:19 PMLike 6 - Missing the point.. They are focusing on people who want to get **** done... Not send **** pics to their pals to look at for a few seconds. I can see a difference. Not sure I'm comfortable with the distinction But I will say I fall into the core they described./ Productive Communication is key, cute apps are not....

Sick Kids remains a BlackBerry customer and has upgraded to the BES10 server, ordering Z10 and Q10 devices. But to manage its non-BlackBerry devices, it turned to Silicon Valley-based MobileIron and now deploys more Apple devices than BlackBerrys, says chief information officer Daniela Crivianu Gaita. The reason: Software firms that made the specialized applications the hospital used to manage patient files and X-rays on desktops created mobile app versions but not for BlackBerry. And while BlackBerry now offers the capability to manage all of Sick Kids mobile devices, Ms. Gaita says its solution came too late. Based on what I know from my peers, most people have a similar strategy they still have the BES but have either implemented, or are in the process of implementing, another mobile device management solution. Being Canadians, wed love BlackBerry to do well. I think thats why theyre keeping the BES.10-19-13 02:25 PMLike 0 -
The problem wasnt that we stopped listening to customers, said one former RIM insider. We believed we knew better what customers needed long term than they did. Consumers would say, I want a faster browser. We might say, You might think you want a faster browser, but you dont want to pay overage on your bill. Well, I want a super big very responsive touchscreen. Well, you might think you want that, but you dont want your phone to die at 2 p.m. We would say, We know better, and theyll eventually figure it out. bbq10l likes this.10-19-13 02:27 PMLike 1 - The definition of Prosumer is:
"Company trying to create a new cool marketing term to describe it's user base after realizing that they cannot compete with their competition in the consumer market."
Reminds me of the "Super Apps" campaign.10-19-13 02:32 PMLike 4 -
- wow, sad reading this article. I thought they've learned. Blackberry needs a complete new management with forward thinking minds.Poirots Progeny likes this.10-19-13 02:35 PMLike 1
- Or "Company trying to create a new cool marketing term to describe it's user base after realizing it doesn't have one and needs to stall for time with smoke and mirrors."10-19-13 02:37 PMLike 3
- It's also nonsensical because lots of enterprise and creators are making use of some quite specialist apps - BBRY has this narrow vision of people just emailing - I guess because they lost the apps/ecosystem war.Moonbase0ne and bbq10l like this.10-19-13 02:42 PMLike 2
- I would really like for someone to seriously explain what "communications
device" and "Get Things Done" means. But more specifically, "communications device". It seems like the new cool thing to say when defending your phone.10-19-13 03:01 PMLike 0 -

- The whole "tools vs. toys" and "who needs an app when you have a great browser" things came to mind (at least for me) when I saw Clewley's comments.
These seem like fundamental, ideological debates that have revolved around RIM/Blackberry, its products, and its users for many years now (probably at least 3-4 years)... Many of the CB podcasts over the last few years touch on this too. I hope Blackberry can find some success, but it leads many to speculate whether the company has the right strategy and leaders are in place. Perhaps things will become clearer when the Fairfax/Lazaridis/Lenovo/et al. thing starts to shake out in the next month or so.jupiter8 likes this.10-19-13 07:21 PMLike 1
