I'm going from a Blackberry Q10 on BB10 to a Dtek50 on the Android platform. Some people have told me that I should expect to use more data because my old BB compressed data. Is this true? Should I compensate by adding data to my plan? Thanks!

No BlackBerry 10 did not compress data, that was BIS on BBOS 7 and under. However, you may notice higher data on DTEK as its Android and usually has a lot of background processes running at any given time. With Marshmallow you maybe able to mitigate some of that by its ability to turn off certain permissions in the applications you download.

Make sure you set Google Photos and Google Play store to update over WiFi only, especially if you have a media card from a prior device. When you set up originally do so in a good private WiFi. After it settles and you are set up your DTEK50 will likely use no more data than your BlackBerry 10 devices. Google Play Store and apps update endlessly.

True. I do not use those either and for family Facebook stuff I use and recommend either the Chrome browser or Facebook Lite on Google Play as it is small and you can use Messenger via the app as one can using BlackBerry 10 browser. I use no more data monthly via DTEK50, Classic or Passport with my usage. I manage 5 email accounts with our appraisal business and receive 1500+ emails. Same data across all.

Background apps will ruin your data. On BB10, you control what's running. On android, anything is subject to be draining data, especially social media apps... particularly facebook. My data usage went up quite a bit before I realized my billing cycle was up. Pay attention to app usage, permissions, stuff running in background and weeding out stuff that doesn't need to be running.

Go to settings
Apps
(select an app)
And go to "Data Usage"

There will be two different options.

Background data - toggle to enable / disable background cellular data

Unrestricted Data usage - unrestricted data usage when data saver is on.

I'm not sure if these features are specific to Android 7.0+ or not.
