#BlackBerry to close tech support site in #Bedford, N.S., where 350 people work. Will repay $2M contribution made by N.S. gov't.

Not really sure why they needed a tech support site in Nova Scotia, but I guess it's getting closed. Too bad for the job losses, but BlackBerry is doing a good thing in repaying the government contribution.

just closing the site as a cost saving measure. Most of the employees will be working from home.

Not "most" of the employees -- only 35 of the 350. The other 315 will have to look for work elsewhere.

This is too bad. Just about a month ago, someone from tech support in NS helped me solve a very mysterious SMS issue with my Q10. These are some very talented front-line support people.

The technical support centre was set-up in Bedford, NS, in part due to the government wage subsidy, lower wages compared to Waterloo, ON, and to provide services to North American and United Kingdom enterprise clients as well as consumers primarily in Canada and the United States of America. At its height this centre employed approximately 750 people. The layoffs began in 2011.

And due to the fact that BB10 is doesn't require as much tech support, so need having all those people hanging around waiting for something to go wrong.

Actually BES 10 is almost completely hands-off from a support perspective once deployed and deployment is 99% easier than BES 5.

The latest group of BlackBerry employees at the Bedford, NS, office were met by Halifax Regional Police at the behest of BlackBerry management to ensure these former employees left the property immediately and without incident. The remainder of the technical support staff will be terminated in early January 2014 with considerably smaller severance packages than their co-workers. I wonder what would happen if Thorsten had shown up to bid farewell to the employees?

You make it sound like people are entitled to jobs and that they can't ever lose them.

    Sh1t happens, get over it.

No dumb dumb... I was referring to the underhanded tactic of having the police present during a massive layoff by a company. It tells me how little the management thinks of their employees.

Using the police does seem very over-the-top and insensitive to me.
