"BlackBerry blow: Etisalat and du pull plug on new BBM services in UAE

UAE telecoms operators have abruptly pulled the plug on BlackBerry?s newly launched BBM Channels social media service, only two weeks after its launch.

The mobile operator du said yesterday the service was no longer available, in response to guidelines from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

?In accordance with the internet management policy issued by the TRA to regulate internet content that is not in line with moral, social and cultural values that the UAE stands for, the BBM Channel application is unavailable to du customers until further notice,? the company said yesterday. ?We count on the support and understanding of our customers in this regard.?

Etisalat yesterday said on its Twitter feed that the service was not supported by the operator, eight days after insisting it was.

BBM Channels service, an extension of the Canadian company?s popular service, was launched globally late last month.

The service ? supplied on BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS devices ? enables BlackBerry users, be they companies or individuals, to create channels linked to their profiles, that other users can subscribe to for updates.

?I updated the BlackBerry software on my phone and the service worked fine, and there was quickly quite a lot of local Arabic content generated,? said Sameh Ahmed, a Dubai-based pharmaceuticals manager. ?Then all of a sudden it stopped working.?

The TRA declined to comment on the issue.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, that's going to be a risk in some countries.

So why does the Dubai channel I follow still available for me then? They shouldn't have a channel to promote what they don't want. I know it's someone else's channel but still

Lol. How is this acceptable? It seems like this is one of the only countries you ever hear about banning anything on these forums. I would have moved out a long time ago if everything was so censored.

Does this mean regular BBM messages are blocked as well, since it's all part of the same app?

The UAE telecoms regulator has a weird policy of censorship first, figure access and control later. I wonder for how long can they sustain that in a world of new technologies being introduced rapidly. To start, what is their policy? In the many articles going viral and not so kind tweets about this the TRA continue to be silent. Ohh yes and this is the countdown to host Expo 2020! Lets also not forget that bbm was almost lost in the UAE a few years ago. RIM back then gave in to their demands indirectly. I recon the privacy some aspects of channels offers is what bothers them. So what the hell, block it anyway just like everything else (bbm video & voice). What upsets me the most is blackbeery's response. Their statement is pretty much the same when other aspects of bbm got blocked and to date no new updates... and the UAE continues to be a strong market for BlackBerry. Go figure!

It is a fundamental tenet of post-modernism (with which I usually agree) that authority figures are incompetent at best, and predatory leeches and psychopaths at worst. So to many of us in the west, such a move seems incredibly evil.

Accessing Facebook is too tough in Blackberry phones. I am a tester by profession and working in a Dubai based digital media outsourcing comany (Kreata Global) and I found blackberry is tough for social media lovers

In Dubai the internet is not full of porn. It is anything but.

Dubai has grown too fast for it father's. It's a new city with an old way of thinking, they will even admit this. Things will change in 20 years, but it's still the middle east.
