According to the BlackBerry Bold 9900 Overview & Bold 9900 Details - US It seems like the BOLD 9900/9930 is back again! Just like John Chen promised somewhere in March. As far is I can see the 2014 edition got exactly the same specs as the 2011 edition.
Now from the formal Q4 2014 financial results it was seen that BB OS7 is still very present today and as far as I remember people here in the CB-community were not so happy about it because OS7 was blocking the way of BB10 to get fully integrated in this modern world.

In my opinion every sold BB = cash rolling in for BB, so if the Bold 9900 was so popular back in 2011, I hope the 2014 edition sells well. On the other side BB didn't upgrade the specs(at first sight) to nowadays standards of a phone of that price-class, and that is a pity. Also if they want to show the world BB and it's OS has evolved in the past years I think this is a bad move.

What do you guys think? Is it a good or a bad move from BlackBerry?

The Bold 9900 edition 2014 is priced at $399.

Irrelevant to consumers. It's for businesses on old BES servers who need to replace their broken Bolds before BES12 and the Classic come out. That's good for them, better than having to replace them with awful Curves or leave BlackBerry. Kudos to Chen for making a promise then delivering in under 3 months. Beyond that, like I said, irrelevant to general consumers.

I was hoping the specs would be upgraded and it would be rocking bb10, but that is unrealistic for me...plus that is basically the classic coming later this year. i have a 9900, but upgraded to the z10 and now the q10 because i needed the keyboard. I can't imagine going back to the 9900 because i like bb10 better then bb7, but that's just me. Maybe it is for enterprise users as stated above? Either way, i hope it's all good things for BlackBerry to come...

More capacity means a bigger battery pack, so probably a redesign of the whole phone's backside/ the whole phone

So you don't think that the release of this phone wont affect the numbers of Classics that will be sold once released?
    I doubt that!
it's indeed nice to see Chen keeps his word, but on the other hand I'd just wait for the new Classic in stead of buying "new" 3 year old tech

Yup they should have done it, otherwise this will be a flop like when it was released 2-3 years back!.

With all due respect to John Chen, I think this is a bad move. He's the million dollar man and knows alot more about this than I do, but from my perspective we need more people on BB10 so that developers feel like it's worth their time to develop good native apps. Sure a BBOS sale is still money in the bank, but without apps,BB10 is going to die and the future of BlackBerry handsets is in jeopardy. It feel like they're mortgaging the future right now.

I don't know ? His data suggested to open another production run for the best BB7 phone due to demand for a trackpad phone. Whatever doesn't sell they probably bundle it and sell in bulk to some company. BES12 will have legacy compatibility anyway.

Lol man they are trying to milk every bit of profit they can until that BlackBerry Classic comes out by offering this for $400. They have got to be making a decent amount on this device. These specs have to be nearly dirt cheap for them to get

What happened to the 9720? I thought that would be the cheap transition phone to get people/corporations to BB10 until server upgrades/ replace broken bb7 devices. And dont anybody dare say it was for emerging markets or cheap prepaid plans because the 9320 is still being sold.

My feeling is that the new inventory of Bold 9900 edition was just meant as a stopgap measure until the Classic becomes available. Regarding the same specs, the decision was probably driven by the cost involved. Why spend additional resources on a device that the company does not plan to be a part of its future?

I think it has to do with popularity. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 was a far more popular enterprise device than the 9320.

No thank you lol. That price tag is absolutely crazy

    Posted via CB10
Most of those devices are going to enterprise markets where the posted price tag is within reason. More than likely there will be some type of discount for those companies that buy in bulk.

yeah u must have been living under a rock , since if it was a success(though i loved it) then BB wouldn't be in the situation where they are now! It was just not comparable to the high end devices at that time.

Too bad the majority of BlackBerry users and purchasers don't agree with you....thus the new production run. If there is demand....create some supply.

In terms of a "modern OS", that's purely a subjective statement. Some may feel an older OS and device that lets you do more than the newer OS and device is the "more modern" one.
