This might be interesting for those who want to get the gps working without the QPST program. In other words you can get your gps working without even attaching to a computer....
NOTE: You can really screw up your device by messing around with options available in this screen. This is meant for those who know what they are doing and are willing to take some risks.
Since OS 4.0 or so there has been a hidden Engineering Screen in the BlackBerry OS. It contains a ton of options and views into what you device is doing and how it is running. For example, DigitalbOy put together a guide on how to disable 2G or 3G on an AT&T Bold without debranding it. It is pretty easy to get into the screen but it takes a little work to get it to go away and the options available have no guide to help you through them.
You can use the easy Thyth-o-matic Engineering Screen Unlock Code Generator at absolous.no-ip.com/projects/escreen/index.php to generate a code to view the engineering screen. Access is controlled through a code generated from your application version, device PIN, and device uptime.
From the instructions:
To access the escreen, access the device "Help Me!" screen. For QWERTY devices, perform the key combination Alt+Shift+H on the homescreen. For SureType devices, type Alt+EACE on the homescreen. For SurePress devices, hold the Escape button, and tap the screen upper left, upper right, upper left, and upper right corners in that sequence.
The "Help Me!" screen contains the application version, PIN, and current up time. Without leaving the "Help Me!" screen, enter that information into the generator. The generator will give you the 8 digit code for the current "Help Me!" screen. If you close the "Help Me!" screen, the device uptime will no longer match the uptime used to generate the code.
Type the 8 digit code into the "Help Me!" screen. You will not see the digits as you type them, but once all 8 correct digits are entered, the escreen will activate. Make sure to use Alt for the numbers on QWERTY devices. Make sure to use multitap to enter the digits on SureType devices.
Once activated, the escreen will replace the "Help Me!" screen for the duration specified when generating the code. You can close the escreen earlier by setting your device clock ahead past the expiration time, reactivating the "Help Me!" screen, then setting your device clock back to normal. Note: Devices with a vendor ID of 1 (RIM engineering sample devices) will always have the escreen open.
Then go to: "Radio Engineering Screens" --> "GPS" -->"GPS Options" -->
Set "Session" to "New Position" and then Save
Set "Network Access" to "Allowed with dmod"
Set "Privacy Option" to "low" and then save
Set "Transfer Protocol" to "TCP/IP" and then save
Then set Operation mode to "MS based" then Save.
Then go to: "PDE Options" And Enter the correct "IP Address" and "Port Number" depending on the list below and then save
Then go back up to "Transfer Protocol" and set it to "TCP/IP" or "DBE" depending on the list below and then save

Well, I gave this a shot and Google Maps still doesn't work on my Verizon Curve. BB Maps still functions normally however, so it didn't break anything. Other ideas?07-17-09 02:53 PMLike 0 -

Been struggling with this problem for almost a year since I got my Curve. Tried the fix using the instructions above, most of the things were already set as outline just had to change to MS option and enter in the IP. Worked like a charm with GoogleMaps. When finding my location give me a cell site location at first then narrows to my location. But unfortunatly as I have QuickPull running nightly, it does loose the info once that goes off.07-19-09 12:29 PMLike 0 -

Not sure on every reset. I "reprogrammed" it last night and it was working perfectly. When I woke up this morning it wasn't. Hadn't turned the phone off nor did I reset it. I went into the programming screen and the IP info was gone. Reentered the info, saved it, double checked that it saved, exited out of the programming screen and right into Google Maps. Works perfectly. I don't know why the info seems to "disappear" like that??????
I'd like to know about the "permanent" method as well. Maybe he/she is referring to the method which requires PC software to access the GPS info to change it. I tried that and it didn't work for me. I'm sure it's because I am running OS .160. From what I read you need .77 or lower to do it. You can downgrade your OS and then perform the fix and after upgrade your OS. I really don't want to go to all that trouble. I thought the OP's method would be perfect. If the information would would "stay" (so to speak) it would be perfect. Hmm very interesting, I'll give it a try when I get home. Also, I don't know anything about software development but maybe there is a way an application can be devolped that automatically will find the key needed to access the menu, then go into the settings and change the information at the click of a button?
Not sure how hard this would be but a lot of people would benefit from it instead of having to constantly manually enter the information.

Thank you a whole bunch! I have an 8330m on the US Cellular network with BES. I have spent hours on the phone with US Cell and RIM trying to get this issue resolved. They finally told me on July 15th that they would soon be releasing a statement about this issue, but that still doesn't say when the issue will be resolved. I followed the instructions listed here, and it worked great. I did notice that for US Cellular I was supposed to have the Position Calculation set to Mobile, but couldn't find a place to change that at all.
It worked great with all of my GPS applications, except for Google maps, which I even had trouble with on my 8830WE, so who cares about that. BB Maps worked very quickly. I even did a complete battery pull, and it still worked flawlessly after that.
