This is the next big market, replacing the windows desktop/laptop. You could go to any of your offices and place your phone into a dock, and you would have the same experience as if you where at your desk.

    Two additional advantages:

    1. Total control of data through BES
    2. Substantial Savings by only having to purchase monitors, keyboard, and a phone dock.

Think BBRY will need a partner to make it happen though.

It's an awesome directions, and would've loved to have this on my Z, however I do believe that a few android devices have been doing this for a while now, and Blackberry is only arriving to the party now.

I'm not bad mouthing the step, because it's a step in the right direction and I think that it's wild.

I couldn't tell ya, but the technology that Blackberry is using to accomplish is available on android devices. from what i know, the USB hosting and Miracast have been around for a bit.

Like the OP stated, it would be great to have a docking station which eliminated the need to have so many things plugged into the device. If you see at the end of the video, the guy had to unplug three 3 different items.

BB10 on a traditional monitor and keyboard setup translates very poorly. Virtually all the benefits of bb10 are negated.

Ubuntu edge/ubuntu phone has this capability, and it would be awesome if blackberry starts doing it. The only issue is that a desktop/phone combo needs high specs (according to canonical, and I see their point), and BlackBerry does not exactly splurge on specs. I don't see how blackberry can offer one at a competitive price.

You can use a mouse as well, which could give you the "swipe" portion, just like it did on the PlayBook.

I disagree. I would love to be able to give users a fully featured Citrix App with Enterprise IM and UC phone capabilities. With Citrix, you can host everything internal to your network and then use the phone as the entry point, while all the heavy lifting is done on the back end.

This is a fantasy that keeps resurfacing from time to time.

It has been done since years ago with far greater capabilities than BB10 can provide or will likely ever provide (Android dual boot into Linux, Moto Atrix, Galaxy Note) and it has not taken. Many reasons why. From the competitive price of computers and graphics cards (which will always be more powerful than cell phones) to programs not available on mobile OSs (and especially BB10) to expense and convenience of cloud solutions (similar issues as to why "thin" clients have not taken over), to simple convenience vs laptops (if I unplug a work laptop from its dock at work, I can take it to the beach and still work comfortably as opposed to if I unplug a work cellphone I will need to carry a dumb screen, keyboard, and a mouse to get the same convenience).

Ubuntu Edge is vaporware, a trial baloon which Ubuntu floated to get some interest into its Ubuntu phone. Ubuntu had a working dual boot phone which it was working on but now seems to have shifted gears into some nebulous desktop-mobile convergence.

I was going to ask how well the atrix did. Seems most weren't interested.

what we need is Adobe Creative Suite. no ifs ands or buts, it is the most direct way to get artists, designers and generally fashionable people on the platform.

yea that could prove a challenge, having fireworks, dreamweaver and photoshop open (CS6 at least) is way over 300meg ram useage even at idle, and lets not even talk about exporting a video with after effects. Phones wont be a full on replacement for heavy tasks like that, at least not for a fair while given the specs needed for heavy work.
The other issue that arises is driver control. sure a mouse and keyboard work lovely, what about graphic pens and tablets? the kind of hardware adobe users would have.
I know my Wacom tablet and pen aren't just plug n play, lots of drivers to install to windows for it to work.

Also we seem to be ignoring the elephant in the room. this is pointless without all the big apps youd need in office environment

Part of the reason that it's a fantasy is that even the most powerful mobile CPU are frankly crap when compared to even cheapo desktop CPUs - once you start have three or four browser windows open, office, outlook, spotify, dropbox etc all running... well I'll keep my cheapo PC thanks.

i'll agree that there are technical, shall we say, issues with the amount of power we'll need, i think that another generation or two of phones could solve that, until then i think we need basic reductive versions, i believe that there is some basic photoshop out there for mobile, that could be a start, you are right though, i would like to use my wacom tablet as well...

let's not rule it out, i'm hoping someone is listening at BB HQ =P

But you are still trying to use something for touch and designed for small-screens in a desktop world, I'd rather just use an OS designed for desktop...

Yep, I've used W8 on ultrabook/tablet hybrids and it makes some sense there but for my day to day usage, I spend all of my time in either specialist analysis apps or Office365 apps, so it's straight to the desktop and I stay there - all of the metro things I do quicker and better on a tablet.

So....that is really cool until he backs out of the text editor and goes to the home screen and it occupies like 1/7th of the monitor because bb10 devices don't have a landscape home screen, then it looks like garbage. very few mainstream consumers will ever even care about this is BlackBerry doesn't implement a landscape home screen
