While sad, not necessarily big if they're a part of the previously announced 4000+ lay-offs. And neither the OP, nor your link addresses this point.

Th OP doesn't make much sense, and from the actual story (not just the rambling of the OP) I got the impression these are part of the 40% worker reduction, not in addition to.

It's no solice for the employees who are being let go, but I would agree with the poster who said this isn't really BIG news.

They must have updated the post.

According to the statement, the layoffs were part of a 40 per cent workforce reduction announced in September 2013, with the reduction period ending in May 2014.

The BlackBerry 2 building was one of five sold to the University of Waterloo in December for $41 million. A press release from the university said BlackBerry 2, along with BlackBerry 4, would be leased back to the smartphone maker for up to five years.

BlackBerry's latest round of layoffs come before it was due to announce year-end and fourth quarter earnings for fiscal 2014 on March 28.

Sad and I feel really sorry for the guys and gals that have been fired, but I believe it isn't new (furthermore big) news for them, as it isn't for us. I wish them all good luck for a very prompt new position.

A big news would be Z30 being available for AT&T and T-Mobile or direct to public by Blackberry.
A big news would be if they released 10.3.

Other than that, just another day in BBRY.

But, that isn't really news. It is part of the layoffs they announced in the Fall. We knew this would continue since then. If they keep making headlines it will become worse. People see that and stop buying BlackBerry even though they are informed that it is all part of layoffs that were announced months ago. How many times is this going to make the news?

And they have at least ~65 job listings on their career page, possibly some of which they may hire multiple people for, so this particular reduction probably won't have that much net impact anyway.

Sounds like more people whose jobs are being outsourced to Foxconn.

They are advertising for a bunch of hardware-design interns for summer jobs also, BTW.

Guess they're trying to keep the salaries low.

What the bug is this about? Big news equal company dissolve or sold. Anything else like 10.3 or release of high end phones or anything tech related are non major news.

I'll come out of retirement to make one comment on this.
The wireless group was a major innovator for BlackBerry from day 1, these guys delivered a platform that gave best in class reception, voice quality and data transfer - things people on Crackberry had pride in. Many of these guys were here from the start, they are more blackberry than heins or chen.
The loss of this group marks the end of innovation in a key product aspect, blackberry are now just one of the pack.
The loss of these guys IS a big deal, I wish them all well.

    Doom, Doooooooom, DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!!

I admit that Chen seems clueless about devices.

On the other hand, I'll take company survival over company death.

this was part of the layoffs announced last year so this is not new. Sorry to hear people lost their jobs but this isnt a blockbuster news story. The layoffs continue until may 2014 this was already planned and in the cards. So big news this isnt.
