    The z10 would be a good choice, because the price is reasonable and it is a well built device.

    My child can use my Z30 and my wife's z10 easily. We have about every angry birds made. Lol. I'd recommend the z10 just because of price. You can find them on ebay for about $150 used with a 90 day warranty. Much cheaper without warranty. O yeah he is 4 and has been playing on it since the launch of the z10 in the US

    iPhone, iPhone are so simple, a zombie could use them. My autistic nephew uses an iPad and loves the thing.
    iOS 8 is also bringing a lot of improvements to the parental side of things. Family sharing, permissions, location... You can completely violate your child's privacy if you choose to haha...

    iPhone is something that your child would (probably) end up wanting and is also a very powerful parenting tool. Not to mention how easy it is to share between Apple devices..

    If it's only texting and calling, then a smartphone isn't needed. You'd just need a basic qwerty phone.
