Wrong name from the start, PowerBook,
WorkBook would have been better. PowerBook is an old Apple laptop trademark. They weren't gonna let a direct competitor use that.

    wrong RAM
1GB was huge for a tablet back in 2011. The problem is that PlayBook OS, and BB10 after it, both have an inefficient memory management design for a mobile device, unlike iOS and Android, and so do not make good use of the RAM that is available.1GB should still be enough to run a 2014 mobile OS, iOS 7 runs fine in 512MB. BlackBerry messed up in the OS not the hardware.

Add to the dismal experience of interaction between the QNX PB and BB10 (poor spec) devices and yup, the product was right, the time was right, the price was as death defying as a incomplete OS.
By interaction do you mean Bridge? By the time BB10 launched PlayBook was all but publicly EOL'd by BlackBerry. 6 months later it was publicly EOL'd by BlackBerry by scrapping BB10 for it. Bridge for BB10 was never going to have millions of dollars spent on it. It's a wonder that text messaging and BBM came to Bridge for BB10 at all.

As for the timing of the PlayBook it was all wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. The QNX based phones should have come first in 2011 to build up the new app ecosystem. You don't have to have an ecosystem on a phone to still be able to use it as a phone. Once there's some momentum behind the new platform then the tablet should have been launched that could actually make use of the phone's existing app ecosystem to give it a running start, just as iPad can run iPhone apps and Android tablets can run Android phone apps.

BlackBerry got this utterly back to front and launched PlayBook, a tablet which, being a tablet, depends entirely on an app ecosystem to be useful and successful, with no app ecosystem. And then they launched the phones after, that couldn't run existing PlayBook apps, with no app ecosystem whatsoever, again. #FAIL

I'd say the 9700 was the last phone where I felt I hands down had the best phone out there. Since then I've had a 9800, 9810, 9860, and z10. While I loved them all,i found myself having to explain why it was the best phone for my personal preference. With the 9700 I remember easily winning arguments on why my phone was better than whatever and also convinced many others to get one.

Best one ever? Damn that's going to be hard - I loved my Curve 8320, was very, very happy with my Bold 9700, was delighted with my Bold 9900, fell in love my Z10 and adore my Q10. Current one is always the best Bring on the Q20 or 30 or? As long as it's BlackBerry, I'm happy!

I have to say, the 8700! That thing was a beast of a device. Back then, my missus would complain I never put my BlackBerry down, and in fact, I didn't.

Now, I even leave my Z10 at home sometimes, not because I forgot.

PS: the 9900 is VERY close
I had an 8700 for years! It was a great BlackBerry at the time. BBOS 4.0 was where the BlackBerry Smartphone really came in to being with not just wireless email bit also a fully wireless Calendar, Contacts, Notes and Tasks too if you were on BES 4.0

ActiveSync devices couldn't do that until quite recently!

Well, I really loved my Curve 8520 back then (my very first BlackBerry), just the way I used to type very fast on it, and then I fell in love with my Bold 9780, specially for its BBOS 3G unlimited modem ready connection

9000 was my entry to BlackBerry world, was the 1st BB device that looked acceptable coming from always having a high end mobile and joining the BlackBerry system just for bbm and a great email service...it was a game changer in Europe for sure.

For me, I have several bests. Legacy BB it is BB99x0. BB10: it is Z10 and Z30. (I also have the Q10 but do not favour it due to lack of toolbelt ). I cannot point to a single best for me. I have many BB phones and keep switching back n forth. But my top three are as I listed and I keep switching between them mostly.

I agree with the 8700.....what a great phone for its time... Maybe they can bring back the thumb wheel with a keyboard. That would be a classic phone.

Great in its time but it's time was a decade ago! The track wheel has no place on a 2014 phone I'm afraid.

Funny, the track wheel was already a decade old before the 8700 got it.

I had the Sony CMD Z1 back in the day, I believe it was the first phone with a track wheel.

And now I feel old lol
