Peter Mansbridge of Canada's CBC news show The National raised a question about PIN/BBM messaging and the government senate investigations. Has the RCMP requested access to government BBM messages? Are these even accessible to investigators? Are BBM's logged on servers?

No one on panel had much tech knowledge so I'd like to appeal to the forum to learn the answers...
    Cheers.

The Police can request access however, BlackBerry has never laid out EXACTLY what access is directly given to Police in those instances. They simply just say that they act in accordance with the law under lawful access procedures and those depend on country requesting access. It also depends on whether or not you are on a BES or not. If on BES, your BBM messages can be logged by the Admin. Long story short, you should assume everything is being logged somewhere.

Also BES administrators have (under BES 5.x and below) access to these messages.

But only if logging of pins/text/phone calls is enabled (individually enabled)

Only if the BES administrator has enabled SMS logging and presumably BBM logging.

So it's an interesting question, does the Canadian Government enable logging for their highest level users? Nations secrets being secured by some IT admin....could be another Snowden waiting to happen.

Especially interesting in light of the recent news of allowing government officials use of other phone platforms.
