This isn't very surprising. If you trend the last 5 quarters, this is about par for the course. The reduction of their overall losses is something to be positive about, I guess.

What I don't understand is why it is bad for blackberry to misstguess of analysts for 2 years... but not a bad thing that analysts are consistently wrong when it comes to BlackBerry?

What are they basing the analysis on if they are always wrong?

BlackBerry says he'll never be as 'super-human' as investors want - Winnipeg Free Press

"They're not listening to what I said," Chen told a roundtable of reporters Friday from the company's head office in Waterloo, Ont., after posting third-quarter financial results.
    ...
"We told them that this quarter the revenue would be lower, and none of them listened — they jacked their revenue up," he said.

"There's a level of frustration on our part that they don't understand the steps we have to go through to strengthen the balance sheets."

Now this is an interesting article. Like many people, analysts seem to have short-term memories. Either that or BlackBerry isn't being clear enough with their investor communications.

The quarterly 'reckoning' is the bane of every CEO planning for long-term improvement of a company. No one can pull through with their plan without factoring in having to please the "spectators" on the sideline...

How much worse does the patient have to get?

The 2nd quarters increases... seemed to indicate that enterprise was using the EZ Pass program not only for upgrade their licenses, but that it was leading to a demand for hardware. With the continuation of that program, the clearance prices and the release of the new Passport... one would assume that hardware numbers would have continued to go up.... that's what many here were expecting. So it's not just that the numbers went down, it's what that might be indicating about BlackBerry's niche and their need for BlackBerry devices.

Now it's very possible that most of those customers want a QWERTY Device only, and that they knew the Classic was suppose to be coming this November. So they delayed hardware purchases in expectation to it's release. And maybe we will see a huge jump in sales next quarter - or manybe the following one depending on when US Carrier's have it. But if the numbers don't improve by that point... you can pull the plug on BlackBerry hardware, there won't be any treatments that will save it at that point.

You got to love the FUD postings. They were out in force on friday as the SP opened at like $9.2 and yet after all their FUD the sp closed at $9.99 and now we sit at 10.75+. I ignored the FUD and bought $9.15. One has to ask why do some spend so much time spreading FUD on a BlackBerry fansite. Draw your own conclusions

The plurality could be in reference to the revenue expectations of multiple analysts, each with different projections.

Analysts are the biggest waste of air in the financial world!!. How many of them were right about 2008? Almost none. If you go back a year how many said blackberry was dead and would be sold off in pieces. In other words don't waste your time basing anything on analysts perceptions use your brain and make your own recommendations you will be far better off in the long run.

You can dislike analysts and ignore their opinions (as long as they don't agree with your opinions).

But the slowdown in hardware sales is a little troubling.... the increase in the last quarter was explained as a result of EZ Pass conversions. As enterprise is not known for waiting around for new hardware (or adopting new hardware very quickly). I can't imagine the slow down in movement was due to the soon to be released Classic.

Whatever the reason, I doubt Classic sales will make much of an impact in this next quarter either, so it is something that may cause a lot of concern when it is repeated back-to-back. But as long as Chen can cut cost and raise margins... then they'll see positive revenues, which is what any business wants. Just not sure how long you can shrink and still make money.

Chen did some creative accounting to make things look like they were getting better. Unfortunately, sales still suck. There a limit to how much land and other assets BlackBerry can sell to compensate for that.

If BlackBerry can't create devices that appeal to more than just the BlackBerry faithful then they are going to have major problems.

First of all it was not creative accounting. BlackBerry has been reporting its financial position the same way for a long time. If there was any dishonesty the S.E.C. would be all over them.

Second point, BlackBerry is more than just devices and a lot of people still fail to understand this. A big part of Chen's strategy was to diversify BlackBerry's revenue stream. Whereas a few years ago the sale of devices accounted for 80% of BlackBerry's revenue, in the last ER they accounted for 46%.

Income from BES and BlackBerry's software services are beginning to account for a larger share so BlackBerry is not totally dependent on device sales. And all is not lost if BlackBerry did not sell as many devices as these analysts expected. That is one of the reasons why their share price rose above $10.

Another point of view: It's getting easier and easier for them to exit the device market if sales figures don't rise in 2015. For pure smartphone users (what most Crackberry users are) it's getting worse and worse. Most users here won't care about the ongoing existence of a company named Blackberry that sells MDM management software and QNX OS.

They are the ones who need to get carriers supporting them. Businesses do not stock things that just sit there. And yes in the states bb's just sit there taking up space.

BlackBerry must give carriers a reason to support them. That reason will be direct-to-business sales.

You make a product that there is demand and carriers will support you.
