Taiwan-based handset component makers including Silitech Technology, Ichia Technologies as well as ODM Wistron are expected to begin small volume production of RIM's BlackBerry 10-based products in December as RIM has announced it will unveil its next-generation BlackBerry phones at the end of the first quarter of 2013.
More than 50 telecom carriers around the global have begun testing BlackBerry 10, and RIM has also started touting the new BlackBerry models to business clients, according to industry sources.
RIM plans to release two BlackBerry 10-based models initially and will source handset components such as keypads and chassis from Silitech and Ichia, while subcontracting assembly to Wistron, the sources indicated.
However, makers in the supply chain of the BlackBerry 10 are cautious about building up inventory due to the challenges faced by RIM, the sources revealed.
