Does anyone know if the AT&T network recognizes what phone you have? Or if you hook up through the desktop manager, does that tell the AT&T n/w what BB you are using?

Yes. When you put a SIM card in the network knows.
    DM has no bearing.

Just curious as to why you are asking.

A friend of mine bought his phone before the mandatory data plan AT&T imposed. His BB is registered using a different imee #. All of a sudden, he started getting these messages on his phone saying AT&T added a data plan. Others in his family have BB's under the old plan but his is the only one getting hit. He just upgraded his phone to 4.2.2 and he thinks that is what did it. Either that changed it where the n/w can see his phone or the DM is registering. Could 4.2.2 be doing it?

All he needs to do is simply call and explain that he got that phone before the
    mandatory data rule applied.

Won't matter. When he bought the phone is irrelevant.
When he activated service is the controlling issue.

And to the OP, DM and the OS has nothing to do with it, at all.

But does the AT&T n/w detect what phone you are using?
