Well N4BB states that Verizon and AT&T have drastically reduced the price of the Z10. One is selling it at $49.95 on a 3 year contract. I didn't think my Z10 would be in the bargain bin in 4 months. What do you people think?

They aren't selling but aren't some other new phone cheap with a contract also? The carriers make their bucks on the contract

When you sign the 2 year contract, the carrier makes up the cost of the phone over the 2 years. They do it on all phones, not just BlackBerry.

It's not bargain bin, it's good business sense. Profit from devices is quite small. The money is made on the long term contract.

It's better to give away the phone and lock in 1.5 to 2 years of revenue from the contract as opposed to keeping the device price high and thereby not getting revenue from the phone OR the service plan.

They should have done this from the beginning. The cell phone market is highly competitive and selling a completely new OS at iPhone price is a severe strategical error. Microsoft is using Nokia to sell very cheap undercut devices and making Nokia taking the financial hit and even that is difficult to gain market share. The market is flooding with cheap Chinese Android phones at almost the same specs as the expensive ones.

BB10 is a very good OS and people need to experience it so making it financially out of reach for many is not a good move.
