Used to have the blackberry and loved it but have been an iPhone user for the last 3-4 years. Lately I have been getting very nostalgic for the keyboard and Blackberry in general, as I'm getting sick of the iPhone and don't really find any excitement in upgrading to the 5s. But with all the news about Blackberry's demise and lack of apps on Blackberry, I'm wary of going back. While I won't miss much about the iPhone, I will miss the apps a lot and that's the major factor keeping me from going back to Blackberry. Is it a wise idea to spend money on a phone made by a company who may not be able to support it for much longer and not have any apps to use??

What apps do you use? Are they available on BlackBerry or do they have worthwhile substitutes?

If yes I say make the move to try it out if not I wouldn't.

Thanks for the replies. While I'm not the heaviest app user, several apps are staples for me such as Facebook, Google Maps, banking apps, some shopping, grocery lists, etc. I know majority of these don't exist in Blackberry and I might be able to get by with sideloading Android apps....but how well do the apps really work with that? But on the other hand, I primarily use my phone to text, email and make phone calls so that is why I loved the keyboard so much because I am a heavy texter. iPhone's tiny keyboard and crappy autocorrect drives me crazy sometimes! I don't know, I need to think about it some more....

If you like keyboards you won't find a phone better than the q10. With that being said we could see a price reduction on it soon. Also it is starting to get old. Consider all that.

Honestly you should upgrade to the 5s and then buy a q10 off the Internet, it'll be much cheaper that way, plus you won't regret getting one over the other if you have both!

the latest Google maps side load works good for basic features. Some things don't work like I tried to use voice to say my destination and when I tapped the microphone icon it crashed. I also can't save locations/favorites though as you need a Google account for that. Overall it's good though

I have the q10. Sideloading is ridiculous. I have done it, and the apps often crash or infuriatingly require the back button which you know the q10 doesn't really have. Therefore, you will spend a lot of time closing the app and going back in to do what you want. Also, the sideloaded apps are generally not scaled to your q10 screen so you may not be able to see everything you want, and many don't have a scroll up option. Some apps are ready to sideload on Google. Others need a key and only THEN can you sideload. You have to find someone to give you the key. At that point I gave up with the ridiculousness of it all. If you buy the phone, buy it for the keyboard knowing it's limitations. THEY ARE MANY. In hindsight, I can honestly say it was too much money paid for what I got.

No it's not a bad idea. BlackBerry needs you to come back now more than ever. If enough people come back the company will still be able to offer its products in future.

Also, people on the forums will suggest you download the latest software link to make sideloading easier. Do it at your own risk- you can blow your warranty and brick your phone, etc. You shouldn't have to work so hard to make your phone do what others can already do. I would wait to see what is going to happen in the sale if I had it to do over again-. Too much money for these limitations and uncertainty.

It's not the consumer's job to save BlackBerry by buying subpar products just to keep them in business. It's BlackBerry's job to make products that people want to buy. If the present lineup of products with never-ending leaked software updates and sideloading is the best they can offer then they should have no future products.

BB10 Android player has a back button. Swipe from the top and it appears. If the app crashes swipe from the bottom to minimize and close the app. I understand that apps aren't always compatible with the Q10 screen size but that part about using apps being frustrating tells me you never really learned to utilize it. I understand it's not for everyone though.

With the price drops and the fact that BlackBerry 10 does not need BIS to keep functioning, I'd say it's a good time to try BlackBerry. If you buy one at a decent price. You'll certainly get enough use from it.

I'd still buy it, although it quite depends on the situation. Honestly with the latest break-up news I wouldn't get myself a BB10 phone on a 2, let alone 3 year contract. I highly doubt current BB10 devices will get any major updates if BBRY decides to break up.

If you can buy it for cheap then go ahead. But honestly, if I'm not already using the Z10 i'd wait it out until the deal closes on November just so I would have a better idea on how things will go moving forward.

Don't be daft, the current blackberry 10 phone are so good. I like you use to love my BlackBerry Bold for the fast keyboard etc. While waiting for the price of the Q10 to come down I got a Z10, OOHH boy what a phone probably best phone Ive ever used.

Am not new to touchscreen as I had a galaxy note also and hated the touchscreen experience, but BlackBerry touch is something different altogether. I thought I would never say this but am afraid am hooked on it now ;-)

Just waiting to get hold of a Z30 next

Even if BlackBerry does go pear shaped tho I don't think it will, you will still have a great phone for the next few years...hope that helps in your decision makings.

Best of luck with your choices

Facebook: There is a facebook app, it doesn't have a share button but it integrates with the hug so there you go.

Google Maps: there are about 1000 alternatives on BlackBerry World. I use the native version. Up to you, it's powerful by Tom tom.

Banking: sadly my bank doesn't have an app for the Blackberry, However they have a nice mobile site that works like one so I saved their website to the home screen and put it in a folder. Does the basics. May not be enough for you but perhaps it is. There's also Check mobile that you can put all your banking and bills into one app, even pay them in the app too, never been my thing but they say that you can.

Lists: there is nothing more superior for lists than BlackBerry Remember. It integrates with evernote and your calendar. In this manner it syncs with non BlackBerry devices as well. I often start rough notes on my blackberry, finish them on my computer later, and read them back on my tablet.

I have lists that vary in complexity from what was ordered for dinner on a certain night and by whom, to what my thoughts were while reading a passage of scripture. The separate notebooks keeps it very well organized.
