Is it possible to have a background for the zen ribbon view and then change it to something solid on the icon view without having to download a theme?

If I understand your question you want the Zen home screen background image to be different from the application screen background image. You cannot do that unless you have the source file for the theme. I don't remember if it's even possible on an 83xx theme.
