Here is a great historical take on the original BlackBerry phones and how they were ahead of their time and transformative.

    Sorry. Before android took over.
Though we all know the concept and idealism of being "smartphone like today", which drown blackberry into current userbase, was first invented by apple and its iphone.

In USA, that figure is 40-50% depending on how calculated. If expanded out to North America then Western Hemisphere, it’s still pretty high for Apple share. When factoring planet existence to remote corners with Android OS and places high largest country populations, the number is far more skewed toward Android but that also doesn’t represent OEM profits either. I’d lay odds that bulk of Android OEM hardware share was sold for a loss.

Right. Apple gets 80% of the hardware profits (with Samsung getting most of the rest) despite the smaller overall market share - having very few models that are produced in high volume, and having full control over nearly all aspects of the product makes for high profit margins.

Google makes money in other ways, so it doesn't need high margins for hardware, much as Microsoft figured out with PCs. The hardware partners take most of the risk. But for many companies, smartphones are too important to leave the market, even if they take a loss, as participating in it raises the profile of their other products.

I guarantee you that Samsung and LG sell a lot of TVs and appliances because people know the name from their smartphones.

Maybe not taking over, but Apple did change the game again.

That's because the screens are all turned off. TVs with the screen turned off are boring too. That's because what matters is the CONTENT, and bigger screens are better for accessing that content. That simple fact has been driving the industry since 2010.

You didn't need a big screen when you couldn't use a real web browser, a GPS app, a substantial application, or stream high quality video on your phone - but we can do that now, so standards have changed.
