My Apps that work with WiFi (meaning when EVDO radio is OFF):

    Email - push/send
    Browser
    NBC Launcher
    Bloomberg Mobile
    Weatherbug
    Facebook

Apps that do not work with WiFi (but should?)

BusinessCam (an app that allows video for net cameras)
    Garmin
    YouTube
    Visual Voicemail
    SMS Texting

    Phone - eventually?

This is a known issue, it has to do with the BIS accounts, and if you have BES you get full data while on wifi. RIM & Verizon are aware of the issue. Temp, but expensive fix is to upgrade to the BES account.

Phone will probably NEVER work on wifi, but who knows? Currently the only carrier in the US to offer this is Tmobile and they charge extra for it. IF verizon ever offered it you can rest assured they will charge and most likely more than the 10 bucks a month Tmo charges for this.

SMS and MMS are not going to work. They rely on the voice side of the house to operate. Same with visual voicemail.

Slacker works as does weatherbug, blackberry maps, the crackberry app store, blackberry app world, pretty much everything that I have on my phone that needs data can use WiFi except google maps.

sms and mms use the data channel on CDMA, not the voice channels. This is why you can sometimes send and receive texts, when the signal is not strong enough for voice. Also why you can receive a voicemail alert, without you phone ever ringing or showing the missed call.

Since these are data based (as is the visual voicemail) I don't see why VZW can't find a way to do it over the Wifi/Internet data network (like the BIS does).

I understand voice is different, not that it can't be done (as it has with T-Mobile).

This is also why you can send and receive SMS/MMS messages while you are on the phone. VVM uses these channels to retrieve your messages, they only way that these channels would be open for data usage over WiFi is if Verizon enables UMA(unsecured mobile access). There is a good chance that they are not going to so that because of the fact that it is unsecured. Your phone will never show you a missed call unless the call makes it to the phone. If you turn the phone off and call it, then turn it back on it will not show you a missed call.

Why can't we get voice and sms over WiFi? Doesnt the Verizon Range Extender do exactly that? It connects with the phone through CDMA, and then sends it over the Internet. Why couldn't they do the same app for the Storm phone using WiFi?

It does work if you access it from the browser (m.youtube.com). It is the Youtube Application that does not work on WiFi, gives a connection error. I'm not sure why?
