I use endomondo. Available in app world. Uses gps to track your distance, speed, and route.
Thanks man! This app seems great. Does it work well on the 9700? Do you just turn it on before you are about to start riding? Does it drain the battery a lot???
GPSlogger can also log a track.
Have you tried the BBSpeedOMeter App? It works really well and offers excellent support.
Also worth looking at is the miCoach app from Adidas; works really well on the 9700.
I've started using Enomondo. Very cool app!
Make sure you lock the screen after starting the app, and yes, it does drain the battery. Longest I have is about 3 1/2 hours usage. Look like I am going to have go Garmin after all with my 5 hour rides.
I personally use Endomondo whenever I go walking or biking. Its amazing how much it offers and for free.

Traxx works great for me for my rides (and yes, I'm also the developer of the app). Battery will typically lasts around 8 hours when recording.
Blackstar Navigation is my go-to app for this sort of thing. And any GPS app will slaughter your battery - it isn't the app's fault, it is just the usage of the GPS that does the damage. You can try to maximize your life by decreasing the frequency of track points (that is, longer distance between each point) although I haven't tried that.
I would recommend you NOGAGO Outdoor as free App in the Appworld available under navigation and map section.
The Battery consumption is less compared to other Apps and it is for a free App very featurerich. The GUI is very is to use and optimized for Outdoor use. When you have a GPS lock and the signal is strong the light of you device turns green.
