My son at college uses a BB smartphone and I got an alert that he is approaching the data limit. I see some large files but I cannot see where they're coming from. He says he mainly uses Twitter. I see his tweets and do not see anything that jumps out.

Is there any way to see what apps have been accessed and when so I can try to match them up with the details I see on the ATT website?

Seriously??? Your son! In college!? I can say with 99.9% certainty that your son, in college, is watching a lot of porn on his BB. If anything you should be concerned that he's at college with all those college girls and he needs to watch porn to get off. Just sayin.....

Ok then. I gave you my input for exceptionally high data use. I have a ton of apps on my phone and I have never come close to reaching my data limit. Except for one month when I downloaded an exceptionally large amount of porn. Does he have wifi hotspot on his phone? Maybe he is tethering?
How about this one....coming from one parent to another....did it ever occur to you to just ASK him?

Since the data limit was never specified, taking the lower bound, getting to 300mb is plain easy with twitter in a month. You can get to that with BBM alone.

Since the data limit was never specified, taking the lower bound, getting to 300mb is plain easy with twitter in a month. You can get to that with BBM alone.

I assume you mean BB Messaging. He doesn't use that.

I am surprised though that you could use 300MB. I assumed IMs were pretty small files.

I reviewed the detail again and noticed this. All of the large data transmissions are listed under "blackberry.net" while the rest are 1 KB and they're under "wap.cingular."

In addition under the "to/sent" column it says "sent" for all of them.

Does that tell me anything?

Also every time the phone try to access the net, it will show two arrows on the right upper corner even on top of any window/app that is opened.

I keep digging and finding more info. I have an IPhone on the same AT&T plan. I looked at my data report and see that there was a 45MB data transmission while I was in bed late Saturday night.

I do not have a tether option. It's not a hotspot.

Any chance he is taking pictures and sending them to friends? Any time I get lots of data it is usually from sending many photos full size.

Just some thoughts:

1) Tether option or not, there are still ways to tether without the option.

2) Att sometimes accumulates the day's activities and puts the data used at around 2AM on my bill the next morning. The data report you see over night may not be reflective of over night usage. Not sure if your carrier does the same thing.

3) Look at the event logs under BDM under support tools. You might see some activity which can shed some light.

What is BDM? Something on the Blackberry? Blackberry Data Management? Where do I find it?

Streaming music can use a lot of data if you use it regularly. Big chunks of data could point to streaming music.
Ex. Listening for about 45 minutes is about 30-40 MB (approx.)

If it was just on his phone I would question him and his memory but as I stated I had 45 MB data file on the report for my phone while I was sleeping.

AT&T is telling me it must be updates to the apps on the smartphone. Two nights in a row at exactly 12:57 two large data files were transmitted.

My billing period doesn't end until 3.26 so I'm about 1 week into the billing period.

By comparison the two previous months were 106 MB and 90MB. I'm now at 202MB.

Does the "app update" theory sound feasible?
