With the numerous posts Ive seen regarding trackball problems, and how to clean and replace them etc, is anyone else kinda disappointed with the trackballs considering the kind of 'high end' product you would consider a blackberry being? I absolutely love my blackberry and can't ever see going back to another type of phone however I've been kinda disappointed with the issues revolving around the trackball. I had some minor issues before but they usually corrected themselves pretty quickly but today its completely stopped rolling down. I took it out cleaned it, and it will work momentarily now sometimes buts still mainly stuck. I already ordered replacements so hopefully it wont take too long to get since my berry is partially incapaciated :-) Just wondered if anyone else was disappointed with this feature.

I have only had one trackball failure (8310), the rest have been flawless. As to
cleaning, why bother. Pick up a few black ones and never have to worry about it.

The whole trackpad thing does not impress me in the slightest.

i replaced my stock 8900 trackball with a G1 trackball. every now and then it seems to be skipping around. but thats usually if theres a faint amount of moisture on the ball. ive only had the new ball in for like 2 months but it already feels "broken in" and no longer as good feeling as it was when new.

No, not disappointed with the trackball, I like it a lot actually. But I do say WTF possessed them to make it non-user serviceable in later devices.

Replaced my 1st one about 4 months, and put a new one in earlier, the old ones were just worn out.

Have to agree with you there. Have played around with a gemini and think you have more control with the ball over the trackpad...

My hands generally stay clean and I don't have a filthy job or personal life so it's not really a problem for me.

i think its more than just dirt/grease/grime. the ball sometimes still rolls yet fails to track properly. it seems like its failing internally, not just getting jammed up with garbage.

no, im not disappointed at all about the trackball. im more disappointed in the fact that RIM takes as long to put out an OS as other companies take to put out a car. and the OS isnt even going to be groundbreaking..

I think it feels a little outdated having only a trackball. I think it works well enough though. Its very precise and gets the job done. I can't wait for RIM to put out a touch screen + trackball + physical keyboard device. I would be in heaven.

Are there any actual stores you can go to that sells them? I have ordered some off ebay but when the trackball isn't working right its pretty frustrating using the phone and makes it feel like an eternity lol

For the most part, my trackball works well.

However, sometimes it can be pretty annoying. As far as the trackball itself, it works fine, stays clean, I have no major problems. But the functionality IMO leaves something to be desired. I can't tell you how many times I've selected the wrong option in a menu or had to go back and forth a few times before the option I needed was highlighted. This could possibly just be my phone, IDK. I've messed around with the sensitivity too before anyone brings it up.

Trackball on my 8900 works great. On my old 8310 it used to stick once in a while but nothing a cleaning wouldn't fix. I don't think it as much a quality problem than just the nature of how a trackball works. It "tracks" in and out of the casing, possibly bringing with it dirt. Keep it clean and it should be fine.
