Another major android flaw was just discovered. Really hope BlackBerry can keep android secure because security flaws seem to be found weekly lately.

The trick will be getting patches out quickly. Hopefully BB has got a good plan for that and carrier cooperation.

And this just highlights the problem using someone else's OS over your own - you have no control over it.

BBRY/RIM have always stood on their security reputation which up until now has always been in their own hands.

The problem is the SIP protocol on Verizon's and AT&T's release of LTE which needs to be patched. You notice there was one carrier missing from the news entirely because there LTE network from the ground up was Rel. 10 being new from the start. Sometimes you get to redo things all over wanting to be first out of the door.

Nice way to defend android again. Just in the last couple of months there have been at least 3 MAJOR security vulnerabilities discovered that will only be patched in a few of the top devices. There are literally tens of millions of devices that will probably not be patched at all for some of these vulnerabilities because of Google's stupid android scattering of versions. The entire patching system in android is seriously broken and millions will suffer because of this.

I am not defending Android or any OS, I am just stating the facts. Everyday I read where they are finding security holes in Android, Windows and IOS and probably Blackberry too except it's market share is so small they are not factored in. That's all I was trying to say that no OS is 100% safe.

Yeah, and again, when there are flaws found in the other platforms, they are fixed very quickly. Especially by Apple. Android is so scattered and such a mess that millions never get patches and continue to be vulnerable. We are not talking about bugs and small flaws. We are talking major security vulnerabilities. Google should have known years ago that because of their dominance in the phone OS market that they were going to be the number one target and should have developed ways to patch their Swiss cheese OS in a more timely and better manner. So keep defending them.

Don't forget that most of these security "threats" that we read about are just discovered in a lab by people with vested interests in security matters.

Although it's good that these things are being found, almost none of them have ever actually been or ever will be exploited and used in the real world.

With 83% of the world on Android, how many actual, serious breaches affecting normal humans have any of us actually heard about?

The biggest (and maybe only) thing I recall recently was the text message that you could send to an iPhone user that would reboot his/her phone - and that was just a minor annoyance.

As well its usually the user that put themselves at risk with sketchy apps and porn sites.

I do agree that there needs to be a better system to roll out patches by every manufacturer and carrier. This should be done through the app store but android is a fractured mess.

Still I don't lose a second of sleep worrying about any of the clickbait, fear mongering reports of threats. I also have a dust covered playbook that keeps me safe from all manner of online threats

    Eh..

"In one example, a malicious Android app could quietly make phone calls without the user's knowledge. That could be used to generate money on premium lines, over-billing,.."

seems a little hopeless to count on a carrier to rush to fix this... lol

To be fair, Google seems to be rather fast with providing patches to manufacturers. Actually that is one of the huge problems Android has: Google says they did provide the patches, yet the majority of users don't get them in time, because manufacturers like Samsung, Sony or LG take quite some time to push them to their devices. Sometimes that process takes months, sometimes a device never gets the important security fix pushed at all.
For example my Note Edge got the official stagefright fix supplied last week, almost three months after a patch was supplied by Google. My girlfriends Sony Xperia wasn't much better, it received an update last months, again two months after the patch was available. Even though we got those patches, the rather new, smaller stagefright security hole is still open.

This is something where BlackBerry simply needs to shine. What use is a "secured" Android OS, when critical internal routines need to get patched and BlackBerry also takes such a long time to push those fixes to their users?

I've been using Windows since 1992. Same old proclamations going around that will bring the Digital world to an end (Y2K anyone?). One friend stocked up on Diapers and Bottled water in fear of Y2K she could've started a distribution business after.

I've only had one virus using Windows the past 23 years - a Christmas Wallpaper I downloaded from a questionable site. From that I learned that most accidents occur when you Jaywalk.

Exactly, same in the IOS and Android world when folks root and jailbreak their devices, it's the same as bringing pigeons to the cat.

And it was patched right away. So YOU haven't heard of or had a breach of an android device so that means it doesn't happen. O.K., just in a lab. LOL. Keep dreaming.
