BlackBerry cut something like 4,000 jobs. You have to expect some of the VPs would have to go as well.

The BlackBerry Ltd. BB.T +6.88% executive in charge of software design and one of the key drivers behind its current operating system has left the company, the latest in a string of executive departures under the new leadership of Chief Executive John Chen.

Don Lindsay, BlackBerry's vice president of user experience since 2009, left the company in January, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Mr. Lindsay, a longtime Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp. MSFT -0.76% designer, was instrumental in the development of BlackBerry 10, the operating system the company debuted along with several new devices early last year.

Mr. Lindsay was also a key player in the company's 2010 acquisition of The Astonishing Tribe, the small Swedish company that became the backbone for the look and feel of BlackBerry 10.

A BlackBerry spokeswoman confirmed Mr. Lindsay's departure.

Since taking over at Waterloo, Ontario-based BlackBerry in November, Mr. Chen has overseen a wide-ranging executive overhaul, ousting most of the senior leadership team and installing several of his former colleagues from SAP AG in top positions.

Earlier this month, Andrew Bocking, the BlackBerry executive in charge of the company's messaging application BlackBerry Messenger, or BBM, left the company. In December, executives in charge of global sales and mergers and acquisitions also departed.

As someone who loves BB10, I see this as a loss. I am worried with the "belt" talk that BB10 will become more utilitarian and simple. I want my bling with my efficiency.

After watching that video you posted, It really reminds me that BB10 should be a success in every regard. Not sure of the reason for his departure, but he is one of the main reasons we enjoy BB10 everyday. That in itself makes you wonder if BlackBerry is losing someone they shouldn't?

Don did software design ... and had many others on his team who will step up. Todd Wood and his team did hardware design.

That makes complete sense, a company with thousands of employees only had one person on the design team.

Honestly, that may not be far from the truth. You create a new, modern, and unique, gesture-based touch user interface and then the management comes along and mashes it together with buttons and 5-year old trackpad technology to satisfy the complaints of users. I'm not saying BlackBerry shouldn't listen to users, I'm just saying that hardware buttons taking up space go completely against the original "content is king" key principle of the BB10 UI guidelines. So I can understand why the guy ultimately responsible for the design might be frustrated, or see the writing on the wall, and leave.

On a related note, did anyone call those five buttons the belt before a few days ago? I never hear "BlackBerry Belt" (besides holsters) and now it's belt belt belt belt belt...

Makes me want to hit people with a belt.

Step 1: Imprint a BlackBerry logo into a belt
Step 2: Hit people with belt

It's the BlackBerry Belt they want, they'll get it more than a couple of times
It's kinda always like this, isn't it? Like the Liquid Graphics term a few years back :P
