- Yea i hack and slashed on my 9700's ROM quite a bit when i had it. It's just a shame you have to do so much hacking to get the phone's memory down to where one can use the applications they want to use.07-28-10 03:54 PMLike 0

Shrinking the OS down would work great. IF they release an OS to begin with.
We won't know until we know. Maybe in the next couple weeks RIM will release a list like they did for OS5.07-28-10 03:54 PMLike 0 -

So - a 9650 ships with 512 mb memory. Out of the box running OS5, it has 302 megs free, i.e 512-309 = 203
There is no way OS 5 on a 9650 takes 203 megs.
What is probably happening, is for high memory devices, RIM has some type of caching / reserved memory taking up space that scales with the total amount of memory in the device. So the OS takes up X memory + a Y allocation that scales with memory size.
Will OS6 take 200 megs on a 9700 ... maybe - maybe not. But I know OS5 doesn't take that much on a 9700, and does on a 9650. I'd say we won't be able to guess at the free memory amounts until we see a 256 mb device with OS6 installed.
A more likely issue with 256 devices is the speed of the memory. Perhaps many of the 256 meg devices lack sufficient bandwidth to run it fast enough. Or as others have suggested, touchscreen support costs a lot of perf/memory. So maye the 9700 / Pearl 3g are ok case they have sufficient bandwith or lack touchscreens.
